Ida's Story

Life Well, I was born 20 May 1963 at Gorgas Hospital in Ancon in the Canal Zone in Panama to Sgt and Mrs. Hogarth. I was named after two grandmas whose names are Aida and Ida. Pretty cool I think. My daddy got orders to Wright Patterson AFB, OH, In 1964 my brother Bobby was born and we lived there for a while until daddy got orders to Lackland AFB, TX. There we lived near a convent and catholic school in which I made lots of friends watching the kids during recess through a chain link fence. in 1967 Pauly was born. Then in 1968 daddy went to Korea and we had to stay behind since it was one of those unaccompanied tours. We got orders to Panama and off we went again. Panama was nice until my brother Pauly got really sick from so many shots interacting and ended up with a brain tumor of the Medulla Oblongata. Bobby and I had to stay with relatives in Panama City since mom and daddy and had to go between the US and Panama. Being thrusted into the culture well I went from speaking english to spanish in no time. It was fun and really got some sightseeing in at the tender age of 4 and 5. I missed american kindergarten but because of circumstances, my aunt talked to some nuns and got to attend Kinder with a spanish convent school and afternoons were spent with a great cousin Gladys who finished teaching me writing skills. When things finally cooled down with Pauly we moved into military housing and lived at 1531-D on Howard AFB. Boy we ran the housing area on our little bikes. Bobby and I went swimming at Farfan pool, Rodman pool and I was in Girl Scouts and even went walking on the ocean floor at low tide. I had such and adventerous life there. I went to Howard Elem. for first grade until third, although before starting first grade daddy had to reteach me English since I was so insistent on speaking Spanish lol and then to St. Mary's Parochial school for fourth and fifth. Then dad had orders to Iran and even to Turkey both of which were cancelled on him until we came to Michigan to Wurtsmith AFB. I had Britannicas and would look everything up. I completed the rest of my schooling at RiverRoad Elem. and Robert D. Richardson jr high and Oscoda High where I graduated but made lots of lasting friendships. I took the ballet in jr high but didn't care for it cause I felt the teacher wasn't teaching us the proper methods for classical. I did Track but got bored with it. Would have prefered baseball on the guys team. Lol I had a few crushes but they didn't go anywhere. Most of the guys picked on me cause I was small. Got called names like pipsqueek and string beans. Never had a date either until I graduated but they were duds, they either wanted to get wasted or have sex neither of which I partaked. I was too clean and girly next door. I did like my foreign language classes though. Got married and then got pregnant with my one and only child Anthony who I think is a pretty cool guy. He turned out wonderful and is planning on going to the State Academy to be a Trooper. Up until now my life was pretty adventerous and kool. I now live in a mobile home park and keep house and take care of my pets, while my husband works. I wish I had more kids but it seems my exes and present husband don't like kids.(Selfishness really). Still dream of finding that guy who loves kids, God and Country and want to live a nice quiet life in the country and just let me be me. Ps. I have 2 dogs, 6 cats and a part-time Chinchilla when my son needs time alone from her. Looking for a fun job now so I can get me a new Kawasaki motorcycle and truck. Wish I could have brought home a tank, J/K. School Memories, huh? Well, let's see, I loved Foreign Language classes, my English and Geography. I wish my mom would have allowed me to date, how I would have loved to have gone to the Prom had I been asked. I had a few crushes but of course they never knew. One was Michael Wynne and the other was bad boy Kevin Tester. I also sort of liked Jim Rutherford but you guys never looked my way, except to tease me. My craziest memory was of a girl who OD on something or another and that really made think about never, ever to do drugs. I wouldn't have anyhow since I was a goody-two shoes and still am. My favorite day was Graduation of course since for me it meant I was finished and could go on to other things in life and leave home. I was so ready to go to when I joined the military. The few teachers that were inspiring to me were Mrs. Gordon, I really enjoyed being in her classes, Mrs Haley who really encouraged my writing and gave me good insights and ideas and although they were not HS teachers; Mr Diment gave me the love of woods and power tools and Mr. Hayes the love of travel and Africa, although I have yet to travel there. I just want to say Thanks a MIllion times over to those teachers, they were cool and I love them for what they gave me and lessons I learned in their classes. If I could go back in time, I feel I would have wanted to go to the Prom and I would have screamed at my parents to get my braces and contacts as well as allow me to date. I think I would have wanted to be more assertive as I am today thanks to the miliary. NO, I would not want to be in HS again, I hated the people who teased me and the guys who never asked me out. College Hi, let see, I started college late. After being dismissed from the Army I went to Dorsey Business School in Roseville, MI for a Certification in Administrative Specialist. Then I liked school so muc...Expand for more
h and yearned all through the military to go to college so I enrolled at Detroit College of Business and it was fun. I got my ABA and BBA in Management but also took classes in Health Services and Accounting. Didn't have great GPA due to problems concentrating but then after a head injury you can only do so much. I was classified as learning disabled from it but hey I accomplished getting a BBA, took a while but got it. Well, I have decided to go with what I love doing the most and get my second degree in Automotive Services Technology. Tried the class but found it boring. Guess since I did it for so long in the service it didn't appeal to me as I thought it would. I have since switched to the Medical Assistant Program and hopefully I will still have the desire to be a Doctor after this. Since I had my Master Technician's Certification in the service, although I let it run out, I figure I had that. But I can still get another one plus a degree in my second favorite field and love!! My first real love is really Jet Engines, of course. Baker College so far is fun. I am really enjoying myself alot. I would have wanted that my parents, mainly my mom would have allowed me to concentrate more on studies growing up instead of worrying about how nice her house looked and me taking care of my younger siblings instead of her working. I feel my grades would have been Honor grades had I been given the chance to study more instead of babysitting and cleaning mom's house. Military I started Navy bootcamp in Dec of 1981 and spent Christmas in Orlando, FL and it was nice with the exception we had orange flag that day and it was quite hot. I then went to Yeoman school but got dropped due to the inability to type although now heheh I can type about 76 words a minute. Then after AT I went to the Naval War College and performed various duties with the main one being Security, that was 1982 to 1983, then off to Jet Mechanic school. Did okay there but the Chief Instructor felt I was better off doing OJT and got sent to Oceana Air Station with the VF101 Fighter Squadron. That was really fun until I got married and pregnant and started showing and got moved to the 1st Lt Division. Then I got out in Aug and prepared to have my son. In Feb of '84 I went back in as a Naval Reservist and studied the Supply field as well as the Culinery field. I like the Culinery field and became an MS got up to MS2 and switched to the MA Army National Guard and became a Supply Sgt. That was fun especially going to the field. After my first marriage ended I got remarried to a nice guy from MA until I realized that he really wanted a maid and no kids. So, I left him and went back home to MI and switched to the Air Guard after the National Guard there was shambles. Let's just say prejudicism does not fit in my life. So the Air Guard I went and was once again with the first love of my life....Airplanes, yippee! I had so much fun and went to the Air Force school for jet mechanics after spending time in the jet shop with the 191st at Selfridge ANGB. Then something came up....Dad was kicking me out of his house cause my brother and sister didn't like me keeping them straight and since I only had 2 weeks to find a place, well, I went to the Active Duty Army side was excited when they said they can keep me being a mechanic except this time I would be doing Heavy Equipment and possibly Tanks. I went to Army Bootcamp and just loved it!!! It was really like a health spa waiting for me to visit. I really enjoyed the marching, the cadences and the chow was just great at Fort Dix in NJ. Then I went to school at Edgewood Arsenal in MD. Afterwards took some leave, got a car, packed it and went to Fort Polk, LA. Talk about southern hospitality, wow it was nice except for some of the folks in the unit- 539th HEMCO I swear it must have been a punishment for something I did in a past life. Well after awhile they didn't like me and well Brigade did, so I got to be the Colonel's driver. The coolest folks were at Brigade, my Colonel Parker, SGM Crim, Cpt Huckabee he was sweet and a Helo pilot. Pretty eyes too. Lol Then my unit got it's orders to the Gulf War and off we went. I had fun!!! Well, folks... my second love became,Tanks. I thought those tracks were just beautiful and was itching to get in one and drive it and well, my wish came true just before leaving to Saudi. Like damn it wasn't too bad women couldn't belong to a track unit, those folks are a whole lot nicer. Never thought I would really like palm trees and the desert. Got to meet a lot foreign people too especially eating at the restaruants in the the Saudi mall and in Hafar Al Batin. I learned a ton of Arabic and picked up study guides and translation guides too. I even learned a bit of Turkish and Greek from the restaruants. On some Fridays and Saturdays I would go to the restaruant a favorite and help the owner cleanup after closing just for the free food and interaction of the culture. After returning to the US well some not so nice things happened in the auto shop and guess they thought I was dumb and expected me to cover some stuff that was stolen until I pulled a smarty and requested a Report of Survey. See..noone believed me when I said I was a Supply Sgt before, so then I caused a stir and since I was so Highspeed and squared away and they really couldn't pin anything on me I got dismissed, took the Honorable Discharge, my four rows of ribbons and combat duty and am now a civilian.
