Since we have been to Abingdon several times, we wanted to eat dinner on Wednesday in our favorite dinner spot. This Tavern feels more authentic than our Colonial Williamsburg Taverns.
And we both enjoyed our meals and the experience.
We started our morning on Thursday visiting the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center on the campus of the local community college. The artwork and crafts always change. It is also a beautiful venue for small oncerts and event
Then on to a park that is a first visit for us, the Muster Grounds of Abingdon. We learned about how, in 1780, 400 Patriot mountain men of Virginia under the command of Colonel William Campbell defeated a "brilliant" milita
This strategist was a Scott named General Francis Preston. He led a negative campaign which was not received well and he underestimated the passion of the Patriots.
Another attraction that we planned to see was the Sinking Cemetery.
Unfortunately, it was a quick visit since there was no interpreter on site. But we learned from the interpreter at the Muster Grounds while the first person buried was in 1776, and there are many famous Virginians buried he
Then we decided we had time to drive to nearby Bristol to go to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Here we learned about the recording Sessions held in 1927 by Ralph Peer of Victor Records from NYC.
These Sessions were the start of recording what was considered hillbilly country music. It was the start of music careers for many country and blue grass singers and musicians including A.P. Cater, his wife Sara and sister-
Thursday evening we attended the play Keep on the Sunny Side at the Barter Theatre. This play is the story about A.P. Carter, Sara and Maybelle told by Jeanette, the daughter of A.P. and Sara.
The flags are at half mast at the request of President Biden for those who died in the mass shooting in Allen, Texas.
