Isabel's Story
Life
After 16 years of being an x-ray tech and medical assistant, I switched careers and became a science teacher in South Central L.A. Not as bad as I thought, but things could be smoother in another section of the city. Backtracking, after finally receiving my A.A. at East L.A. College in '89 and a biology degree (worked 3 jobs to support myself and family while going to school) at Cal State L.A. in '96, I decided to move back to Prineville. I worked in Madras for a couple years then with Dr. Sproat for a year (best 2 jobs I ever had compared to L.A.). I'm still looking into medical school, but had to make big money fast, hence the teaching job (via emergency credential) My mom still lives in Prineville (dad passed away April 2020) and my brother moved to Korea from Japan with his wife and 2 children, but now lives 20 minutes from Washington DC and works for the government. I have a master's degree in education (with an emphasis in culture, language, and development).
In September of 2007, I transferred to Bravo Medical Magnet High School. It's only 5 minutes from home and the school is small and the students are serious about their ed...Expand for more
ucation. They needed a chemistry teacher, so I had to take the CSET and I passed. I also taught genetics and zoology, sometimes biology and physiology depending on what the principal needs me for.
There are perks to being a teacher even though I don't make that much compared to someone with the same education (besides summer vacation). In 2012, I was chosen by Earthwatch to go to Ecuador and study caterpillars for 10 days with a research student.
I currently have 6 grandchildren, 3 from my oldest son (a middle school music teacher in Idaho) and 3 from my oldest daughter. (Graduated from Berkeley in 2021). My youngest daughter, who still lives with me, has a pool cleaning business and recently began attending college. My youngest son lives in Madras and has a landscaping business.
I finished nursing school in October 2022 and will finish out the semester at Bravo before starting at the LA County Hospital (LAC-USC Hospital or Los Angeles County- University of Southern California County Hospital) in June 2023. My starting salary will be the same (minimum) with what I'm ending at LA Unified School District after 23 years. I feel like I scored!
