J. Robert's Story
Moving from Louisville, KY to Christiansted, St. Croix in '71 was like being reborn. Too bad one of the most beautiful islands in the world had (and apparently still has) such bad racial problems. That's one thing I enjoy about living in Mexico: my Mexican family and friends come in all colors of the rainbow!
Florida was great after leaving the violence of St. Croix, especially living on Longboat Key in the early 70's and Sanibel Island in the late 70's. But too many newcomers, especially the "condo commandos", have ruined a good thing. Titusville was the last place I lived in Florida and I really enjoyed the fact that tourists only came for a few hours to watch space shuttle launches and then left. Not a retiree and tourist town like so many other coastal communities in Florida.
But it was easy to give it all up and move to Zihuatanejo in '89. No regrets and I don't miss a thing.
I love my life in Zihuatanejo, and consider myself one of the most fort...Expand for more
unate gringos to have ever set foot in this enchanted land with its heartwarming people and ancient culture.
I first met the girl who would later become my wife when my family lived in Zihuatanejo for 6 months from August to February '74-'75. It was love at first sight then as well as when I returned 15 years later. So far (18 years later) we are still on our honeymoon.

My first real job (and favorite) was as an underwater guide on the Buck Island Ferry in St. Croix. Since then I've done everything in a restaurant except own one, I've made handcarved wooden signs in Florida as well as been a driver, landscaper, lawn maintenance man, Sailor, cable TV technician, beertender, condo maintenance, ESL teacher and a host of other minor jobs, some not entirely legal. ;~)
I currently own my own website design and hosting business in Zihuatanejo, Mexico where I am the local king of the Internet! Hopefully this will last me until I retire.
