Jack's Story
Updated on July 8, 2023
Spring has sprung in Texas and we were about to float away. But now summer is here and we have severe heat and 100 degrees to contend with!🤠 It brings me to consider that parts are parts, and the older I get the fewer original parts I seem to have.. Ha!
I had my first major overhaul in June of 2022, and now I’m trying to break in a new right knee. The disturbing thought is that once I get fully functional on the new one, the other knee gets replaced too. This will make me an international personality since the replacement knees are made in China. This getting older is becoming a daily project.😃
However, we’ve survived another year, Now over 57 years since we graduated! Where has the time gone? Hopefully this year will see improvements over 2021 and 2022 for us all.
It appears we have a new threat to challenge our longevity and we all need to be careful and safe to survive the scourge of COVID 19 and Monkeypox with their varients.
I’m a history buff. As we work through troubled times let us pause to honor ALL who have and are serving our great nation, Military and Civilian/Public Service as well. We recently commemorated the 77th Anniversary of the end of WWII. I have a project that entails flying US flags over both the USS Arizona Memorial and the battleship USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and presenting the flags with certificates to WWII veterans, thus commemorating both the beginning and the end of WWII. The legacy of the heroic deeds of all who served then and today is invaluable and unredeemable to our way of life.
When I came home from my 3rd tour in Vietnam, (I didn’t volunteer for any of them), in 1973, I was fortunate enough to receive the Colorado Scholars’ scholarship to supplement the GI Bill. I finished a BS in Aviation Management in June 1975, and assumed a new assignment flying with Frontier Airlines based in Dallas, TX.
My flying career, both military and civilian, enabled me to go to so many historic places on this planet. This undoubtedly enhanced my personal experiences and gave me a greater appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of our forefathers, our peers, and our siblings. I am proud of all who served from our generation, as well as those who serve today. Those who are first responders are invaluable assets to our society as well. It is a pleasure and privilege to tell all that my son, Colonel Bryan Bailey USAF, has completed a Harvard Fellowship and a Pentagon assignment to assume command of the 911th Airlift Wing (C-17s). My daughter continues to educate our grand children in the public school forum and is co-owner with her husband Kyle of a UPS Store.
I renew my deeply felt thanks to those who enabled us to come together for our previous reunions. #50 was monumental and their efforts are greatly appreciated.
What a life it has been! The past 57 years have come and gone like the Wyoming wind! It's hard to believe that it has been over a half century since we walked the stage at Storey Gym!
The 50th Reunion was GREAT! THANKS AGAIN TO ALL THOSE WHO MADE IT HAPPEN!👍
Life has been fast and furious since '66. I've had a full military career, Commander, US Navy Retired, the Only Master Army Aviator in the US Navy, (that's a story in itself); A diverse airline career, Captain, Frontier and Continental Airlines, Retired. I’ve flown over 50 different models of aircraft and helicopters. Additionally, I volunteered as a Federal Flight Deck Officer. Armed, Federally Commissioned law Enforcement Officer, protecting the flight decks of the planes I flew, post 911. Most importantly I’ve enjoyed a very rewarding personal life, a wonderful 35 year marriage, 2 great kids and 3 really neat grandkids. Retirement came 19 years after our 20th ...Expand for more
reunion and an unbelievable career later, 33 years total airline flying.. I had a wonderful assignment flying with Continental Air Micronesia (AirMike) from the Island of Guam to 31 destinations throughout the Pacific Rim. I have been "around the world" more times than I can count since my Continental retirement. It's a dangerous world out there, and a lot of folks around the world don't really like "Yanks.". So we elected to stay closer to home. Ultimately we settled “deep in the heart of Texas”, just north of Houston. For a while after I retired from Continental Airlines I was flying on 2 contracts, One for the US Marshals' Service, "CON-AIR" (B737s & MD-80s), call sign “Justice”. The 2nd was for KHOU-TV, CBS Channel 11 in Houston. "Air 11" (a Eurocopter A-350-Astar). If I had seen you there, you'd have been a celebrity, because you'd have been in the news on CBS and CNN. SMILE, you're on High Definition TV! I finally settled on a new career "on the dark side of aviation." Having been on the pilot side of aviation for over 40 years, I decided to go to work for the FAA and see what it is like to be a "Fed." I became an Aviation Operations Safety Inspector, both Airline fixed wing and Transport Category and Heavy Lift Helicopters, for the FAA, based in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I have now retired for the third time as of Dec 2015, and I’m back to the Houston house Linda and I built when I came back from Guam.
Post Script #1: On September 29th, 2011, my wonderful wife Linda passed away. We had a wonderful life together for over 35 years. She had survived a liver transplant for over a year. During a post procedural hospitalization she contracted pneumonia and lost her valiant fight for life. She was a wonderful person who is very deeply loved, and deeply missed.
I left the FAA shortly after completing Autogyro/Gyroplane qualifikcation in 2015. I was one of 25 Gyroplane Commercial, Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) in the US. A long way from the transport and heavy lift helicopters I had previously flown. As of Jan 2023, I’ve been flying over 60 years and 33,000 flight hours so far and I’m still flying my own plane, a Van’s RV-6A., The TuffBird, Retirement is busy and great and a daily challenge.
On April 15th, 2021, I flew to Pittsburgh, PA, to promote my son to the rank of Colonel, USAF. He’s still flying C-17s and loving every minute of it! I’m still settled in the airpark residence of the past 20 years. Mother Nature made it a challenge after a very hard freeze with frozen and burst water pipes in Feb, 2021, but the house is now repaired and dry.
To all: May Happiness, Good Health, and God's Graces be upon you in the New Year.
I hope to hear from my '66 T-Bird classmates about what has happened over the past 57 years, to and for them. I was saddened to see that so many of our classmates have passed on and are no longer here to share in the fellowship. I do hope that all of you will be at our next gathering.
You've come a long way to get here, keep up the good work.
It was great to see so many of you in Cheyenne at #50. I'm sorry some of you were unable to attend it. Let's get together more often than every 10 years in the future. In the meantime, please stay in touch.
FInal PS: Sorry Gang, but I'm not real good on Facebook. If you try to contact me on FB you probably won’t receive a response. Again, sorry. Facebook just isn't my thing. They won’t allow me to add personal contact info here, so please use Classmates messaging to reach me. You might enjoy some of the pics in the attached gallery.. There are over 100 pics on 7 pages. A chronology of a very rewarding life. My contact business card is on PAGE 2 of the photos, if that helps. Best to all as we pass each day, month and year into the 2020s and beyond. God Bless Us All Now and Forever.😃🙏
