Jack's Story

Even though I loved stagecraft, I turned down 2 scholarships in high school as I had joined the army when I turned 17. My goal was to make the army my career; becoming an officer and retiring after 30 years. More on this later. My Grandfather was in the Phillipines in the Spanish-American War, was part of General "Black Jack" Pershing's incursion into Mexico after Pancho Villa, saw action in "The War To End All Wars" and later served as an army recruiter in Joplin My Dad was stationed at Schofield Barracks Hawaii with the 25th Infantry, Tropic Lightning, on December 7, 1941, and fought through the South Pacific islands including Guadalcanal, earning three Bronze Stars as well as the CIB. Returning from WWII he made Sapulpa his home and joined the Oklahoma National Guard, 45th Infantry, Thunderbirds, Company H. He served as heavy weapons platoon sergeant and went to Korea in 1950. He told he I didn't have to serve, and I didn't. I was "only son and sole surviving son" meaning the last to carry on the family name but we both knew it was time for me to grow up and become a man. Electronics intrigued me and my career plan was to become a Signal officer in the army. The recruiter and I plotted a path of Basic training - Signal school in Ft. Monmouth NJ - Officer Candidate School. I even had a SIGNED CONTRACT; my goals were assured!!! Basic training was a little rocky but I graduated October 6, 1966 and that afternoon boarded a plane for Ft. Ord, Calif. for advanced INFANTRY training. (I think I have a problem). At Ft. Ord the Company !st Sgt asked if anyone felt they weren't supposed to be there. "ME ME." I was told to get the copy of the SIGNED CONTRACT and present myself the next morning to the company commanders office, I did. What I found out was that to go to OCS you have to have a combat arms MOS (Infantry, Armor, Artillary, etc) and that Signal wasn't combat arms. THE RECRUITER LIED TO ME!!! They said they would look into it and for me to "get the ____ out of there". I did. It wasn't a problem of my going to Vietnam, I had joined the army after the war started and figured if I had to go it was part of the Cloud legacy to go to war. Even though I was a kid from Oklahoma (though some may not agree with this) I wasn't a dumb one. I didn't keep asking about my SIGNED CONTRACT. I learned early in my military career to put as small a target on my back as possible Everyone was preparing for Christmas leave, I was about 30 minutes from my bus being called when called to the Orderly Room and told I had orders sending me to Ft. Monmouth NJ for my signal school. It was explained this had gone through the Judge Advocate General as it was a SIGNED CONTRACT and they HAD to send me to the school BUT they didn't have to guarantee that I would pass!! At the point I figured the hell with the goals, do my 3 years and get out of the army. I passed that school and another and went to Ft. Ritchie, MD. While there I got to go the Germany for 90 days TDY (civilian status, lived in a hotel in town, not bad duty for a PFC). I spent about 4 months back at FT Ritchie (making Sp4) before getting orders to SE Asia, being assigned to the 1st Signal Brigade, After a short stopover in Vietnam, I was assigned to USACCCCA in Korat Thailand. With just a month incounry and 8 months time in grade I went before a promotion board, made SP5, holding down an E8 slot, as a shift NCOIC. They gave me an early out (April 69)and I came back to the World and damn had it changed. I was one of the many that was called a "baby killer" and was spit on. I still thank the LA policeman that didn't arrest me that day, he sure could have; i understand many of my brothers did when they were "greeted" this way. Oh, and remember that "only son" "sole surviving son"? I was exposed to microwave radiation that sterilized me so it didn't make any difference after all. I also suffer from the effects of Agent Orange but thanks to God I'm not anywhere near the shape of so many of my Brothers and Sisters. I will say I am VERY proud to have served my country, and will continue to defend mine and your rights to freedom. To my brother veterans, I say "Welcome Home". To those that oppose our rights, our flag, and our country, GET THE HELL OUT. In 1972 I joined the Tulsa Jaycees and stayed as active as disinterested wives allowed. Finally drifting away while trying to save a marriage and later finding the Jaycee friends were still there 12 years later. They probably saved my sanity. And getting back involved with the Jaycees brought me to the love of my life, Nancy. I was honored in 1990 to become US Jaycees Ambassador 2534, their highest ...Expand for more
award; then shocked in1992 to be recognized as Junior Chamber International Senator 49502, the highest award given internationally in the Jaycee Movement. The Jaycees of the state of Oklahoma also awarded me with their highest award, that of Governor 384 In 1994-95 I served as OK Junior Chamber Int'l State president and was fortunate the next year to be able to serve as the Regional VP for the USJCI , representing OK, KS, TX, CO and NM. It was a great honor to be able to serve all these outstanding Senators. Making a short story shorter, I've gone trough 4 divorces over the past many years but have been married since 1999 to literally my lifesaver Nancy. She has been at my side through some really tough times and now in August 2010 we are facing another as am I looking at prostate cancer. Another hurdle faced and passed. Surgery was successful!!! Cancer gone and no need for any other treatments necessary. Thank you God and all my friends for your prayers. I guess I now have 2 birthdays, Sept 23 (my first one) and Sept 27 when the doctor told me I was cancer free. If you're a male reading this make sure you have your doctor check your PSA on a regular basis and if you're a lady and REALLY love that man, stay on him to get this testing. Prostate cancer is slow growing and there are many treatments when caught early. My decision has added many more years with my wonderful wife. March of 2013 I lost my first friend and only sibling, my sister Billie Jeane. A rift developed between us several years before mother died and sadly was never truly resolved before she died. I guess the reason I've added this is that life is too short to let petty things come between you and family or friends. Put it aside, reconcile and become a true family again. Many have asked about the nickname Judo Jack.. Ok, the truth, yes. My father started teaching me when I was 9 yrs old. There were no "belts" for me, except the ones across my backside when I deserved them. What I was taught was NOT to fight, but to defend. He wouldn't allow me to fight. Some of you may have perceived me as cowardly or a wimp. He taught me to use everything in my power to stop a person from hurting me or a family member. I had learned from the time I was 11 how to kill. My father also knew just how violent my temper could be and this was why he would not let me fight; I was too young to separate a "fight" from a FIGHT. My father would constantly repeat 2 statements when talking to people about me "Still water runs deep" and "Never judge a book by it's cover".. He was one of the very, very few that really knew me. Having no children, the story of how my parents met will die with me so I think I'll share here for those who may wonder just how I came about. Dad was from a small town in Missouri and was traveling by bus back home from the war. He had a layover in Sapulpa and walked into a drug store where mother was working. Three days later he told her the story of how women in Hawaii are recognized as single or taken by where a flower is worn in their hair. The next evening she met him wearing that flower. They were married a week later. That was in 1945 and they stayed together until he died in 1988. They reunited in Heaven in 1991 when mother joined him. I was the second, last and best of their kids. Am adding a few items since my last entry in 2013, it's now summer of 2015 and so many events have occurred in this country that I love that are so, so saddening. Many values that I've held so dear have and are still continuing to be decimated by people with .... I can't put into words what I'm trying to say. The tradition of marriage as I've known it is no more. The right to free speech seems to be limited to only what others want to hear not what we're supposed to be allowed to say. Christianity appears to have to take a back door open to terrorism in the name of a god who's goal seems to be death to everyone who opposes him. Our serving military and Veterans are being treated more and more as third and fourth class citizens. My parents raised my sister and me with what would probably be considered "old time values". They didn't spare the rod; and we haven't turned out warped because of it. I was raised to open doors for ladies, say "Yes Ma'am" and "No Sir". Respect ladies, wear my clothes where they belong and have pride in my country and faith in my God. Sure times have changes, but have they really changed that much? My love for my darling Nancy is what keeps me going, her resolve and humor as well as the fact she puts up with me makes for a wonderful life. Thanks for taking the time to get to know me. Peace Jack
