Jack's Story
Hi, All,
After graduating from Resurrection Elementary in 1964, St. Ignatius in 1968 and Xavier University in 1972, I began working at Joyce Beverages, the 7UP and Dr Pepper bottler in Chicago, working in advertising, marketing and ultimately ending up there as Director of Corporate Purchasing for all their soft drink franchises in Illinois, Wisconsin, New York and Washington, D.C. The company was sold in 1986, and so I moved on to Barton Brands, a distiller and importer of alcoholic beverages as Marketing Services Manager, eventually ending there in 2010 (after several ownership changes) as Vice President of Marketing Services. I've since left and formed my own company, Kavanagh Marketing Services, offering marketing consulting services, as well as producing merchandising materials for a host of national companies.
I was married in 1978 and was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Jennifer, in 1981. I remarried in 2001 to the love of my life, Betsy Storm, who has two children of her own from her previous marriage. She also had two step-daughters from her former husband's first marriage. They have remained close, so between us, we now have five children and five grand-children (you w...Expand for more
ith me so far??? Almost need a scorecard!)
I taught myself guitar at Xavier and remained with it. I'm now playing at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, usually in the Bob Dylan Ensemble. Among other venues, we've performed at the Folk and Roots Festival in Lincoln Square and at Taste of Chicago (quite a thrill).
Betsy has just written and published a book, BRIGHT LIGHTS OF THE SECOND CITY, which will be available in June 2014. The book is a compilation of interviews with 50 Chicagoans who are leaders in their respective fields. She interviewed people like Jim Lovell (Apollo 13 Astronaut), Bill Kurtis, Richard Dent, Ramsey Lewis, Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and Peace Activist Kathy Kelly and many others. Working with her on this is also taking much of my time and attention.
I think any positives that I have had in my personal and professional life can be traced back to the training I received at Res, Ignatius and Xavier, as well as to much help and inspiration from many people who are too numerous to name. Without that background and help, I wouldn't have the life that I have, which is great. I now live on the North Side of Chicago in the Margate Park neighborhood.
