Jack's Story

Life: New improved federal restrictions on boredom outlaw the posting of my full bio. But the drier parts are... Graduated from DPHS in 1986. (Duh!) Cum Laude and National Merit Commended Student. (All you had to do was send in the box tops!) Went to UofH for a semester or two. Skipped classes, hustled pool, got a lot of parking tickets. Have worked in: -Fast Food: McDonald's, Godfather's -Retail: Wal-Mart, Stargel -Industrial: Parkem (now defunct, I think), Brown & Root, & Shell (DPMC), ICO Polymers -Technology: Patriot Computer Services (My consulting/service company), SMA Microsystems, Enron (Broadband Services, Net Works), Lyondell-Equistar -Other entrepreneurial endeavors: Quorum, Nikken, a salon (owner/manager- No, I didn't do hair!) Presently, living in NE Harris County, working for American Fire Systems. Playing music and singing wherever I can... Most importantly, being dad and husband to my family. School: Growing up in the public school systems of Pasadena & Deer Park was at least fairly entertaining. In high school, I was placed in advanced/honor courses where I would get bored, stop doing homework, still ace the tests, and get kicked down to the regular -or worse: remedial - classes. The next year would start the cycle over again. I had some fans among the teachers; yet many others seemingly resented the fact that I would not brown nose them or live up to their estimation of my potential in their classes. To all my teachers, thanks for the info and laughs and apologies for the hijinx and scorn. You probably won't know who I feel gets which, but it's said more for my closure anyway. All in all, I learned well enough and slacked strategically, graduating in the top 12% of my class. Some will remember the columns I wrote for the newspaper; some will remember me from band; still others will have no clue about me and may not remember anything of their high school years other than they spent a lot of time in ISC. College: I don't know that two semesters of University of Houston - University Park qualifies me to have an actual college bio, but I shall sally forth with this one anyway. Hopefully, the College Bio Police will be merciful. All in all, my college career was cut short by a equal parts lack of discipline, lack of desire, and wanderlust. As a full time student, I spent more time in the Honors underground playing Dungeon-something on the ...Expand for more
Macs as I did studying anything. Some of my friends tried to direct me to classes, but to no avail. I dropped out sometime during my second semester and have never gone back. I regret not having completed my course of studies, though, and want to return to earn my MS in something fun (Music, Drama, writing college bios for websites, etc.). I did go back to school for some vocational courses: Pipefitting I & II (working for Brown & Root); Real Estate: Practices & Principles, Contracts & Marketing (thinking about a possible sideline); and the CCNA (to see what I really knew about networking). All in all, I'm still the generalist with little hope of getting anything more than an a honorary Associates in garrulousness before I die. Workplace: Man, the subject of work can be a sore one most days. Especially when you have a crappy commute across the oh-so-well-planned city of Houston. Having made some commutes in my day, I know all too well the pain of driving our city's streets during rush hour. Currently, I live in Atascocita and work mostly in Houston. My most painful commute was from 77346 to 77476 for my previous company, which shall now go unnamed.. I used to live in Kingwood (NE side for the geographically unfamiliar) and worked near the Galleria, on the west side of town. You might think that a leisurely jaunt down 59 to the 610 Loop and then west and southward to my final destination next to Houston's most visited mall would be an easy one. Most days, you'd be way off! Now that the dust has generally settled on the major construction in the Humble area, things are easier getting in and out of Kingwood. Just in time, though, construction is beginning on the Kingwood section of the Eastex freeway which will in the next decade probably spawn a couple of generations of new alcoholics and create greater wealth for the construction bigwigs, Houston city officials, lawyers, and auto-body repair shops around the newly laid concrete. I like working with technology though. I have often thought that my ideal job would involve computers, music, golf, good booze, and love. Still looking for a company that encompasses all that without being illegal or downright vulgar. Think I'll be looking for a while... I always wanted to be a Private Investigator when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bizarre idea. As it turns out, they were probably right.
