Jack's Story
Life
I currently live in the Roseburg, Oregon, area. I worked as a medical transcriptionist but am now retired. I enjoy playing and singing mainly Celtic music (jigs, reels, etc). I have been married for 30 years. I graduated from MDHS in 1964 (48 years ago??). We have a bunch of cats (8) and 1 dog. Life has been overall pretty good to me.
After HS, I tried college but couldn't hack it so after a couple of tries, and with the draft looming its ugly head, I joined the army and spent the next 1095 days (3 years) as a company clerk (you want to be secretary??). I did a tour of duty in Korea (13 months) after which I did the last of my time at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco.
After the military, I stayed in SF eventually working at the VA Hospital there. I then moved to Eugene, Oregon, and lived there until 1977. I then moved to the Roseburg area.
Music? I taught myself to play the guitar while in college and i've been playing and singing since. I...Expand for more
n 1975, I walked into a store in Eugene and heard the Chieftains playing beautiful Irish music. I converted to that style immediately and that has been my main style of singing and playing since then. I've played with a couple of "Irish" bands but that became more work than fun so now I seek out sessions to sing and play on an informal basis. I also picked up playing an octave mandolin, tin whistle, and bodhran (bo-rahn). what fun i've been having.
Anything else? Well, now that I mention it, in 1982, I was getting ready to play volleyball in an evening class at the local community college. But my wife, Flo, insisted I try out for a musical at the same college. So, I auditioned and got a part as the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz. Then Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls. Then about 8-9 others until about 1986. Then, it was back to music for me.
I have been retired since September 2011 and began my second (at least) childhood.
So there you have it.
