Jack's Story
After graduating from Newport High School, I attended UW for a Bacheor's Degree in Economics. The "college experience" was good to me! Go Greek!
Professionally, I worked at Boeing during the '80's, and in telecommunications during the '90's (surviving the merger mania that rocked the long distance and cellular industries during that decade). Since 2000, there's been training in aviation and work in the insurance industry. Having owned and run an Allstate agency for a few years in North Seattle, I am now a health and life insurance agent serving the Fort Wayne, Indiana area.
Kathi and I moved here in late 2006 to buy and fix up the house she grew up in; a beautiful 3-story 1902 Victorian in Decatur, Indiana. The people here are great. You get to know all your neighbors and you know where you stand with each one. It's nice to have four distinct seasons here. My only reservation is that it does get to feeling a bit flat now and then. You can stand on the roof of your car and see over the next three hills! That is until the corn gets too tall!!!
One of the biggest kicks among my hobbies was earning my Private Pilot's Certificate. After leaving telecommunications, I set my sights on becoming a professional pilot. But September 11, 2001 turned the airline industry on it's ear so I decided to keep flight as a hobby. It is a real thrill flying a light, single engine aircraft into small, out-of-the-way airports. There are so few limitations in flight giving a tremendous sense of freedom and different perspective on the world around us. Some of these airports can be a bit of a challenge to find so never take navigation or weather for granted. (On my fi...Expand for more
rst cross-country training flight, a small, dificult to recognize airport definitely added to the adventure as the visibility began to drop!) And what a blast to take the family on a day trip by air to an airport with a good restaurant and a great view! Anyone for a "hundred dollar hamburger?" My son, Derek, has caught the aviation bug, too. He is on his way to earning his Private Pilot Certificate this Summer flying around Puget Sound.
My family is my greatest treasure, although I've been married and divorced twice. These trials have been opportunities for personal growth and I've found the lessons, although painful, wuite valuable. Through these relationships, I have been blessed with four incredible children. They've made this quite an interesting year. I currently have a son in college playing baseball on scholarship, a daughter in high school on their travelling choir, a daughter in middle school who dreams of swimming with dolphins, and a daughter in elementary school who's already quite a writer and story teller. They are all talented in different ways so there is aways a variety of things going on! Each has a wonderful and unique individual nature too; a reflection of their beautiful and loving mothers of whom I feel fortunate that they've shared part of their lives with me.
Decatur is my home now in northeast Indiana, just outside of Fort Wayne. The last twenty-seven years since high school have been a bit nomadic so getting back to Seattle whenever I can to enjoy the mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Pacific Northwest is a treat. I have always enjoyed spending time outdoors in and around Western Washington, a place I'll always call home.
