Jacob's Story
Worked as a professional services consultant for 4 of the original Java engineers from Sun Microsystems at Marimba (Sami Shiao, Arthur van Hoff, Kim Polese, Jonathan Payne). Mainly worked with our Fortune 1000 customers. During this time I lived on the corner of 56 and Broadway in NYC. Letterman was out my bedroom window. Live in NYC from July 2000 until May 2002.
June 2001 I married an awesome girl, Tracy Mason. We met through a mutual friend while we were at the U of Iowa. She has the independence of my mom, the humor of my dad, the wittiness of my Aunt Sandy and the craftiness of my grandma Kyner. When Tracy moved out to NY with me she took a management position at Carolina Herrera. Carolina is most famous for dressing Jackie-O for the last 12 yrs of her life. I never had the pleasure to meet Ms. Herrera but I did get to carry her sign in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Of course Tracy got to meet Ms. Herrera and the perfect size 2 pattern model.
May 2002, we moved to Tampa, FL so I could work on a Verizon/Marimba datacenter project. Yes, Tracy hated to leave Carolina however she rather get to see me more often.
July 2004 Marimba was acquired by BMC Software for $240million. Needless to say I left the work force shortly after for some much needed R&R. I ended up enrolling for two semesters at USF to finish my business min...Expand for more
or into a finance degree. During this time I started my own consulting company, Tango Methods. Majority of its/my customers were in the UK.
January 2006, I was asked to come back to BMC. I stayed on as an Sales Engineer/Software Consultant until February 2008.
Meanwhile, Tracy enrolled at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA. We moved on July 25 2007.
February 2008 I left BMC to join Jive Software as a southeast regional sales engineer. Jive was founded by 2 of my good U of Iowa CS friends, Bill and Matt. It's definately good to be back at a small "start-up" and its even better to work with good friends.
I returned to BMC in Dec '08 as a software consultant. Nov '11 I moved into a product management role.
Tracy graduated from law school and works for the Metro Conflict office.
Sales Engineers typically are 10% technical, 20% sales and 70% relationship builders.
BTW- My sister, Emily, is married, graduated from the U of Iowa Physician Assistant program and has a 1 yr old.
