Jacqueline I's Story
After leaving BBCHS I tried several types of jobs. I worked as a gas station attendant for a whopping .25 an hour. Remember when you pulled into a station and they cleaned the windows, checked the air in your tires, checked the oil level and put gas in your car?
I then sold car parts. That job was interesting, but last one hired, first one fired.
In 1967, I tried to enlist in the Army. Although I passed the tests, I have a heart murmur, so I was told they couldn't accept me.
After that I went to most of the factories in the area. Those jobs were boring and I kept moving.
Then I went to Chicago and attended DeVry. I took classes in electronics while working at the school. We had 5 hours of classes, I worked 8 to 10 hours a day and then did 5 hours of homework after I got back to my basement apar...Expand for more
tment. I came back home on weekends to sleep. I found if you left Chicago at midnight you could make it back here in 1 hour.
After graduating with honors in 1974 I started working for Singer Business Machines repairing computerized cash registers. The home office was in Oakbrook, but I was able to have a repair shop in the Kankakee Sears store. After working for Singer for 4 years, I was offered a job at Sears.
At Sears I was able to branch out into working on many other things other than just cash registers. The job was always challenging and you rarely did the same thing twice. Now most of the things I worked on are "throw-aways", but in those days things were repaired. I stayed at Sears until I was injured in a warehouse accident. I have been retired due to disablility for several years now.
