Life
Chapter One:Greetings from the land of Hurricanes! My sisters wonder why I stay...One more year until my 17 year old son graduates, and then I'll think about it. I have lived in Florida for 20 years. I'm on Spring Break right now. I teach Spanish in the International Baccalaureate Program at our local High School.
I lived in Bogota, Colombia from 1975 to 1985. I went there on a Rotary Fellowship to finish my Masters in Spanish at a University there, all expenses paid for a year! I met my husband there, another American in the family Emerald business, and settled down to raise his two kids and our own. In those 10 years I flew as an International Stewardess for Braniff Airlines for one year, climbed Machu Pichu and other mountains in the Andes, traveled Venezuela and Ecuador, as well as Peru and all parts of Colombia, entertained ambassadors at dinner parties, milked cows and birthed calves on a farm outside of Bogota that we l...Expand for more
ived on for two years,learned to gamble,danced with Foreign Ministers and Dictators, learned to drive agressively and fast, threw great Halloween parties every year,got used to having two live-in maids and a girl who came in days to do the laundry and floors, became fluent in Spanish and almost finished my Doctorate in Spanish American Literature.
We had a kidnap threat in March of '85 and left the country two hours later with an military escort of armed guards(We knew people in high places)to the airport. Most of our friends, couples we grew up with in the late 70's and early 80's, also now live in Florida due to the instability and danger there. We chose Florida because my husband continued to run for several years the family emerald business, Greenfire Emeralds, from the states and he traveled there frequently.
We had a girl, Erika, born in Bogota in l980, and a son,Mikel, born in Gringolandia in 1987. More on this subject later.
