Jake Humphries:

CLASS OF 1971
Kaslo, BC

Jake's Story

I graduated from Kaslo Elementary High School (now called J.V. Humphries) in 1971. After several years at UVic, I returned to Kaslo to work for a couple of years for the Jones Boys and Tarr Logging. Returned to Victoria, drove a cab while earning my teaching certificate and then taught there for 10 years at Glenlyon School. During that time I married Joan Gorman and we started a family. We moved around a lot with our three kids - Kathryn, Elizabeth, and Johnny. Clinton, Prince George, back to Victoria, over to Maple Ridge, and then back to Victoria again in 2000. I've been working in Victoria at St. Michaels University School since then. All of our kids graduated at SMUS and went on to University. Kathryn is studying in Vienna (Ph.D.) and Elizabeth in Manchester (Master's). Both are training to be opera singers. Johnny has just completed his first degree (Kines...Expand for more
iology). He is also a national class rugby player. Joan is working on a Ph.D. in Nursing. She is in her eighth year teaching nursing here in Victoria, at Camosun College. She worked for 25 years as a nurse before that, mostly in labour-delivery. We see my brother Tom's kids quite a bit as 3 of them are living here on Vancouver Island now, his twins at university and Elliot, his youngest, taking pilot's training (following in JV's footsteps). We'll also be seeing a lot of Patti's daughter Tess as she has just moved to Victoria. Sister Mary lives in Vancouver, so we see her quite a bit. And we take a yearly trip back to Kaslo as well. I have great memories of my school years in Kaslo. Hard to beat. I've been in a lot of schools over my 33 years as a teacher and I've travelled a lot in Europe, Australia, and North America. Kaslo is special and so is its school.
