Jake's Story
Life
I haven't changed much since school, other than becoming more outgoing and starting my own business. I actually made it to college and graduated December 2003. Life is good, but it's hard to find good people. But, most importantly, I am finally driving an H1 Hummer!! I've got a lot going on lately. I am running my own computer business as well as still working for my dad. We now have two separate business that we are running. The convenience stores are being sold off so that we can get away from the employee situation. We're moving more to wholesale and distribution. Most of my work is done at home, so I always have time, but at the same time, I don't have any. Lots of auctions going on eBay and maintaining our multiple websites can be a chore that takes up an entire day, right into the night. I'm trying to get more free time so I can get back to having a life again.
School
I absolutely hated high school, but after starting to college, I changed my mind quite a bit. I guess the grades you get and how hard you work make a big difference on how you feel about school.
There are a lot of things that I wish I would have done in school on multiple levels. My grades were absolutely terrible and I know I could have done better, I just did not want to be there at all. It was very boring and I wasn't learning much. College was easier because of the freedom. I was able to work at my own pace and get things done well before they were due. I can't work under a pressured schedule. I have to be able to do it on my own. Teams don't work for me because there isn't enough communication. What's that saying..."If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself!" ...Expand for more
That is so true!
College
College...It went so fast. I feel like I wasted almost two years of my life because a) I don't know what happened to nearly two years of time, and b) I didn't learn hardly anything, it was all too easy. It was a rip off. But, for some reason, I want to go on for at least a Bachelor and I'm even thinking of aiming for a PhD. I can have a PhD within four more years at the rate I'm going. It doesn't sound like a bad idea.
Workplace
I am running my own computer business which is going OK. My partner ruined it shortly after startup and I have been trying to recover it since.
Also, I am still working for my father. We are selling the convenience stores because we don't want to deal with the employees anymore. We are now getting into a wholesale distribution business and partially the craft business. There is so much more freedom in this type of business and a lot better markup. It's all about the money, right?
We're having a great time doing it. I get to sit at home and work on the computer all day maintaining the website and processing orders. I also manage our auctions that we run on eBay. There's a lot of money in Internet marketing and sales. And it's what I know best.
Military
Even though I was only in for a short while, it was a unique experience. I joined the Navy as a Submarine Electronics Technician, but was medically discharged. My attempt to join the Naval Reserves died a horrible death. I was disqualified. Oh well, I'm not giving up on it yet. I just have to wait a little while, then try again. My problem wasn't really a problem at all. The doctors just diagnosed it wrong and now they're blaming me. Oh, well.
