Jamal's Story
Grew up to a Muslim family in a suburb in Michigan called clinton Township. Initially went to a private Muslim school but was later transferred to the public school. We were the one of the few muslim family in the public school. It was middle school and can remember the contrast in relating to the majority Christians at Clintondale High School.
For the most part, most of the white were prejudice but with a smile could fool the Christian African Americans. The Blacks in our neighborhood were nice to us but loved to eat Pork. They liked to come to our house. My Mom backed delicious bread and peach cobbler and we had horses and chickens out back.
As a Muslim, I was aware of the pretentousness, deception and discrimination that was practiced. But, the test was who would get to the finish line and go on to college. Therefore, I saw myself competing with the prejudice whites and christian African Americans who mostly had not a clue that whites were not there friends.
There were a few white buddies that managed to slip thru the crack. I remember Dan Gilmore and Mike Groff for example. Dan Gilmore and his family respected the values of Muslims and I remember once we went swimming with them and they bought all beef hot dogs and we had a good time.

graduation time. Now the test is layed out. My blessing was a 4 year academic scholarship at Michigan State University. A free ride at the big ten where I later graduated with a BSEE degree.
From there been to Mexico, Europe and Africa including Egypt where I went inside the great Pyramids and Sphinx. Most of my classmates look awful when I see there picture today. Almighty God Allah may not have liked how they treated me. But the few that was nice to me like Lynn Osbold, Diane Raullerson, Martha Wyborski and others God has been nice to them.
Now, I have a job that a person would dream about. Living in Pittsburgh, PA working with a multi-billion dollar electronic manufacturer as a Sr. Application Engineer. Designing and commissioning low voltage and medium voltage drives for the Nuclear Industry. There are less than 4 African Americans at my facility but the differance is that they have strict policies against any form of discrimination. So I like that.
In short life has been good. Have a son doing his residency at Northwestern memorial Hospital in chicago. A daughter teaching in Flint and another daughter studying to be a nurse. So my story is one of how a Muslim can grow up in a Christian nation and despite all the prejudices, survive to greatness.
