James's Story

Life I worked as an engineer for Babcock & Wilcox (1957-1967) after leaving Penn State. In 1962 I attended Ft Benning, GA, Infantry Officers Candidate School (OCS). I received my commission as a 2nd Lt., and completed 24 yrs of active and reserve service in 1 January 1979. I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. I worked as a Sales Executive w/ Dana Corporation and attained the level of President, Dana Asia, Tokyo, Japan. I retired after 20 yrs, and lived part time on Hilton Head Island, SC 1975-1992. I was the Owner and Publisher of Hilton Head Islander Magazine, 1987-1992 and retired. I presently work as an Independant Life/ Health Insurance Agent (primarily Medicare Programs). . In 1963, I received a promotion from Babcock & Wilcox Engineering, relocated to Barberton OH as a Design Engineer. During this period of time I remained in the USAR. In 1967 I left B&W and joined the Formsprag Division of the Dana Corporation as a Sales Engineer. In 1968 I opened a District Sales Office in Dallas TX for Dana, promoted to District Manager the following yr. In 1971 I was promoted to Regional Sales Manager for Dana, and relocated to Philadelphia, PA. I was promoted by Dana, to Marketing Director, Asia Pacific, and one yr later I was promoted to President, Dana Asia, and relocated to Tokyo, Japan. I was also on the Board of Directors of three Joint Venture Japanese / Dana Corporation affiliates. I returned to the US in Oct.1983. I served in the position of Director of International Procurement for Dana/SE Regional Manager, until I retired to Hilton Head Isalnd, SC in 1987. EDUCATION After graduating from Coughlin High School, I attended Penn State University, W-B PA, completing the 2yr Associates Degree, Mechanical Technology in 1957. Three years later, I completed my Degree at night school. In addition to the above, I completed many executive level financial, legal, management, technical and marketing courses, with the Dana Corporation-Dana University, Toledo Ohio (affiliated with Ohio State University). In addition I had many specialized courses Industrial training affiliated with Fortune 150 Corporations, and also studied the Japanese language while living in Tokyo, Japan for three years. I attended The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania,. Special Accounting/Financial course for The Non-financial Executive I also attended several military schools, the highest level, Command and General Staff College. CORPORATE BUSINESS I was hired as an Associate Engineer by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W)out of Penn State, and joined the B&W Scranton Engineering Office in 1957. In 1962 I took a leave of absence from B&W and went on active duty. I opted to go on active duty and become an officer and attended Infantry OCS located at Ft Benning GA. 63 and was promoted by B&W to their Barberton, OH Engineering Headquarters. I was promoted to various engineering positions over the next four yrs. In 1967 I joined Formsprag Division, Dana Corporation, Toledo OH. I remained with Dana for twenty yrs, being promoted from sales engineer, to district sales manager,opened an office in Dallas TX. In 1971 I was promoted to district sales manager and relocated to Philadelphia PA. In 1979 I was promoted to Director of Marketing, Asia Pacific and relocated to Corporate Office in Toledo OH. In 1980 I was promoted to President, Dana Asia and relocated to Tokyo, Japan. In Tokyo I also was a member of three Dana, Joint Venture Affiliate, Board of Directors. I returned to the US the Fall 1983, and was assigned as the Director of International Procurement, Toledo OH/Regional Sales Manager SE USA. I retired from Dana in 1987 and moved permanently to Hilton Head Isalnd SC. I formed James Associates, a manufacturer's representative company. In 1988, I acquired Islander Magazine, and became the Owner and Publisher of Islander Magazine, Hilton Head Isalnd SC. MILITARY SERVICE I enlisted in the USAR in Nov 1954. completed basic training at Ft Knox, KY, served as Military Police Officer and returned to the USAR in W-B PA. In 1962 I was a Staff Sergeant E-5, when our unit was placed on alert for active duty. I elected to go to Infantry OCS, Ft Benning GA to become a commissioned officer. I graduated from OCS, stayed on as an instructor at the Ranger School. I reverted to Active USAR in 1963. After relocating to Ohio, I joined USAR 83rd Infantry Company as MP Officer, and remained there until I relocated to Dallas TX. I joined the 357th CA(Civil Affairs) Brigade, Dallas TX. I was promoted to Captain and Personnel Staff Officer. In 1971 I relocated to Philadelphia PA because of a promotion to District Mgr , NE with the Dana Corporation. I joined the 358th CA Brigade as Administrative Officer, and promoted to Major. In January 1979 I retired from the USAR, duty position Lieutenant Colonel, CA Brigade Staff Officer, and accepted an overseas assignment opportunity with the Dana Corporation. In 1992 I retired from Islander and James Associates, and relocated to Ft Myers FL where I currently reside with my wife, Mary (Drank). We are married 51 years, June 2009. We have two sons, both who were Marine Officers and aviators.. Our oldest son Jim II, served (20) yrs in the Marine Corp, retired as Commander of Stewart Marine Air Station, north of West Point NY, as a Lieutenant Colonel. Jim Presently is a Corporate Pilot Captain for AFLAC, Columbus GA. Son Gerry, is an executive with GE in Duluth GA.. We have five grandchildren-four girls and one grandson, my name-sake, James A. Kazin, III. I am currently an Independent Health/Life Insurance Agent. I still enjoy golfing and swimming all year around, and spend too much time on line! AMEN!
