James's Story

Life I've been living in Georgia since 1997, writing software for The Coca-Cola Company. I came down here on a consulting gig with Oracle Corporation, then hired on at Coke, after it became apparent I was never going to leave. In June 2000 I married Kimberley, whom I met on the Internet (naturally). We were married in Scotland of all places, in the Eilean Donan castle, just south of the Isle of Skye in the Highlands. It was the most beautiful, peaceful place we've ever visited and we can't wait to return someday. Kimberley is an artist by God's grace and she makes her living doing freelance design work for various rug companies in Georgia. We don't yet have any children, but we do have two beautiful German Shepherds and four cats, so there's always a little one of some variety needing attention around the house. I'd love to hear from any classmates from the Class of '85, so please email me. I've not forgotten you. College I started college at the University of Louisville just two days after I graduated from high school. I was initially an Electrical Engineering major but changed to Information Science after two years. I started working before I graduated and switched to a part-time course load in 1990 and 1991. In the summer of 1991 I moved to Ashland, Kentucky to work as a consultant for Ashlan...Expand for more
d Oil Company, so my college was temporarily put on hold. In the spring of 1992 I took my last courses at Marshall University and Ashland Community College, and graduated with a Bachelors in Information Science in May. I returned to college in the fall of 1994, but this time to teach. I lived so close to Ashland Community College I thought it would be fun to teach there, so I applied to teach two evening computer literacy courses. The experience was unforgettable. I had complete freedom to set the format for the class, so I wrote my own materials and covered the subjects I thought a beginner needed to learn. I brought in a PC and took it apart to show everyone the parts that make it work. By the end of the semester I knew that everyone was feeling much more comfortable about using a PC, and could actually be productive on one. I haven't set foot in a school since then, but I have taught what we call "lunch and learn" sessions at Coca-Cola in the years I've been there. These are hour-long sessions where I pick a very specific topic and hit all the key points about it, and provide as condensed an account of the subject material as will fit in the time slot. It's the equivalent of reading the cliffnotes for a computer book, and helps people who want to know more about various subjects get a jumpstart on them.
