James's Story

Life I attended Forest Park Junior High and was part of the first graduating class of the new school. Most of my younger days were spent girl watching from my vantage point at my home on the corner of East 260th and Shoreview. I worked part time at the Upson Deli across the street from my house bagging groceries and stocking shelves. My childhood friends from EHS were Joe Eckenrode, and Sue Eder from the class of 64, Ken Travis ( 62) and his brother Bruce ( 65). I enjoyed the company of two sweet girls, Susan Collins and Carol Wasnac from the class of 66 & 67 and have remained friends with Carol after 40 plus years. Bruce Lamb, Bruce Batt along with Mike & Phil Lindsey used to come over to my house to lift weights a few nights every week, they were from the class of 66. I lived two houses from Joe & Kathleen Penny (65 ) and their big German Shepherd. Donna Beechuk lived a few houses down the street at 630 east 260th from me, do you remember her ? What a beautiful girl she was, her photo brings back wonderful memories. Do you remember the Euclid bus driver with the huge arms ? His name was George Stuber and he had two children ( Kathy & Jim ) and used to let us guys work out on his weight set in his basement for several years, he was a great role model, I surely do miss him, he was a great mentor and role model. After leaving Euclid I followed my dream and became a United States Marine. While attending one of many Marine Corps schools in Albany Georgia I met my beautiful bride Charlotte, she has followed me faithfully these last forty years and we have been blessed with a beautiful family. I...Expand for more
was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps serving on active duty from 1964-1987. I served two tours of duty in Vietnam from March 1965 thru April 1967 as a grunt with 1st Bn/ 9th Marines until I was wounded and med-evacuated to the hospital ship USS Repose (AH-16). Thank God for Navy corpsmen and Doctors or I would not be here today. I enjoyed my life in the Marine Corps and had many great adventures as I was assigned to more than a dozen Marine Stations, including tours as a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C. and Officer Selection Team duty in Minneapolis. My final assignment was with the Scout Sniper Instructor School and the All Marine Corps National Shooting Teams at Quantico Virginia. I was a full time competitor with the All Marine National Rifle & Pistol team from 1977-87 and was selected for the 1980 & 84 U.S. Olympic shooting team. As a professional shooter I was lucky to have been a firing member of four Pan American Teams and many World and National Championship Trophy teams. I am now semi-retired living the good life here in Georgia with my beautiful wife Charlotte, my adult children and grandchildren. I keep active by working with my new German Shepherd puppy ( Jerry Lee ) riding my motorcycles and teaching small arms repair at the local Marine Base. My motto is still the same "I work today, to make a better tomorrow for you & yours". I am living the request from the 60s and asking what I can do for my country. But after having traveled around the world several times over and visited or lived in more than forty four countries I can honestly say there is no place like home.
