James's Story

Classmates.com lists me as attending Oak Park Elementary between '47 and '51, but that's wrong, and I can't figure out how to change it, I only attended Oak Park Elementary in Traverse City two years from the fall of 1945 through the spring of 1947 when I was between the ages of 7 and 9. For a while I had a job selling the Record Eagle newspaper door-to-door downtown, and I used the money I made to buy comic books at Eddies Grocery which was across the street from our house on Front Street. I have wonderful memories of our time in Traverse City. For one thing, I played cowboy with a friend named Roland and we used an empty chicken coop in our back yard as our ranch. This was inspired by the Durango Kid cowboy movies I attended at a downtown theater. For another, I would frequently take long walks with our two dogs in nearby vacant lots and woods -- there were lots of them in those days. I remember several things from Oak Park Elementary. there was an art contest where we were supposed to make a painting that depicted a forest fire and its effects. I was really into art, and I was hoping to win with my triptych that showed before, during, and after, but sadly it didn't win. Another is that my mother organized a birthday party for me at school; she never did anything like that before or after. Still another was the fire drills where we got to slide down a tube to the outside of the school -- fun! Finally, there were the recesses. We had no PE. I remember playing house with the girls. We came to TC from Detroit in 1945 and returned to Detroit in 1947. I graduated from Detroit's Edison Elementary in 1951, Redford High School in 1955, attended Albion College 1955-57, and graduated from Univ. Michigan with BS in 1960, MS in 1961 (EE), and got a PhD in EE at Univ. Illinois in 1965. Starting in 1965 I became a professor in EE, and I retired as an emeritus professor in 1997. Married (twice) with 4 children.

Thanks to everyone who wished me a Happy Birthday! It was a notable event. We ate dinner at Houlihan's in Champaign and followed it up with a chocolate cake baked by Karen. Here's me staring at the cake before devouring a b
