James's Story
Eventually became a New York State-certified clinical laboratory director in clinical chemistry, endocrinology, diagnostic immunology, toxicology, blood lead, tumor markers, etc., serving as technical director and assistant lab director of clinical labs in New York. The journey:
Graduated from Flint Tech in 1959, started at Flint Junior College in July, graduated, then went on to UMICH-Flint, earning at BA in Physics, with math minor. Went to UMICH-Ann Arbor grad school part time for a year, then went to Tulane University School of Medicine for three years as research, working at USPHS Hospital there. Then went to UMASS-Amherst, where I earned a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, under a physical biochemist. Declined a post doc at Caltech for research on protein structure using x-ray diffraction, and went to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in The Bronx as a post doc in organic chemis...Expand for more
try, then worked for National Nephrology Foundation (NNF) in Manhattan, setting up a clinical laboratory that did lab work for dialysis patients in three centers operated by the NNF as well as research in hypertension and kidney disease. Was there 7 years, then went back to Massachusetts for 3 years, working as manager of scientific instrument development company. Returned to NNF for three years, then went to a private clinical lab in upstate NY, where I was responsible for technical operations for several years. Eventually I ended my career at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, as assistant lab director. Brookdale, located in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn has one of the five busiest ERs in the country. Our lab did all the lab work for the hospital.
And now I am retired, living in Florida with my sweetheart whom I have know from 4th grade, Sheila Dues.
