Jim's Story
Well, it's June, 2014 so I'll update again just in case anyone actually reads these
things. Very little has changed. We did add some family members (Rich married
Denise, Matt married Keirsten, Denise and Rich had Nathan) and, sadly, we lost
our oldest grandson (Sgt. Jacob Michael Hess) who was killed in Afghanistan on
New Years Day, 2014. Some family moved closer (Brett and family from the
Orient to California) while others moved farther away (Chris to med school in
Georgia). With 10 children and 19 grandchildren, there is always something
happening. Oh yeah, forgot to mention our grandson Kris who is serving a mission
in Accra, Ghana. Lynn and I keep plugging along, but the years do start to add
up, so we are talking of changing houses; our current 4-level has three sets of
stairs, so we need something more horizontal and less vertical. Probably won't
leave Spokane since it's virtually impossible to top here as a place to live. Why
not come on up and visit us sometime?
Time to update (from the last entry below). It is October, 2012. We have not moved to any foreign places (after spending two years each in China and Germany) but have been taking many short trips (If Hawaii can be considered short) mostly seeing Canada and the great Northwest. We are busy with family (10 children and
currently 18 grandchildren), church and our personal interests. My new passion is performing...as a singer, believe it or not. As it turns out, I had some latent musical talent. I sing with a couple of groups (about 30 performances per year) and do quite a few solo concerts (30-40 per year). I'm teaching myself the guitar, but it is a long-term project, so for the solo performances I perform acapella (probably wrong spelling). I concentrate on the music of my youth (40's-70's) and enjoy being quite eclectic. ranging from Country-Western to Broadway Musicals to Pop to male crooners and little bits of everything else in between. It is a blast. With the older crowd (I also perform at retirement residences) they love the gosp...Expand for more
el numbers (i.e. Amazing Grace) and heartily sing along. When I do programs for veterans (we have both a VA home and a VA hospital in Spokane) they enjoy the martial music, especially branch-of-service songs. I just love being someone else for a few minutes (i.e. Charley Pride,
Dean Martin, Mario Lanza, Doris Day...yeah, I do female crooners too...John Denver, Julie Andrews, Nat King Cole). I have a daughter who performs in Vegas, so maybe next I'll try some duets. I feel young enough to resurrect some old Donnie & Marie, or maybe Natalie and Nat Cole is more appropriate. I've completed the bucket
list I made in 2000 and am now striking out on a new one. Lynn and I are just finishing biking (bicycles, not hogs)
the Centennial Trail from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene and the Hiawatha trail which starts in Montana and finishes 14 miles later in Idaho. We are also able to work out at the fitness center 3-4 days per week, so maybe I should look into some geriatric body-building contests...or maybe not - who wants to work that hard when you're retired?!? Well, life has been wonderful and I hope the same is the case for all of you Cal-Hi'ers.! Jim
My, how time flies!! We will return to Spokane at the end of June after two years in Germany. Lynn will almost immediately fly to Saipan to bring back two grand-daughters. They will join six state-side grand-daughters for a week of girls camp-type activities. Will we or our house survive? Oh well, how much trouble can eight girls (ages 5-11) really cause. Please, don't tell me. And after that? Who knows. I've toyed with several possibilities, including writing a novel or again running for elected office - but do I really want to do another four years of being a politician?!? Our health is quite good, so more travel is a given and new long-range vistas are possible (hmmm, is New Zealand really as beautiful as it seems?) It seems I will again miss the reunion. Drat! I'm still reachable at Yahoo using my user name of jebrink46. Hope to hear from you. Jim (Brink)
