James's Story
Posted 8 January, 2015
Childhood
I grew up in Tolar and attended school there from the Fifth Grade through my Junior Year of High School. I enjoyed playing sports, but was always an average student. I transferred my Senior year to G.H.S. and drove an ugly, light blue, beat up Datsun B-210 station wagon (a real eye catcher).
College
After H.S., I attended Weatherford College and recevied an AA. Aftereward, I attended Tarleton for another year and half as a Business major. The money ran out so I dropped out, but with intentions of going back. That didn't happen. Later, in '93, I enlisted in the Navy. After 4 1/2 years, I was accepted into a unique Officer commissioning program. The Navy sent me to College Station to attend Texas A&M for two years. In May '99, I graduated and was commissioned as an Ensign. In '06 I began working on an MBA part-time, fitting in with family, work, travel, and a tour to Iraq. Three years and more than 100 research papers later I finished with Magna Cum Laude Honors.
Military
In 2007, I spent more than six months as the Flag Aide for the Commander of the Fleet Readiness Centers at Patuxent River, Maryland. I left his staff that summer due to my selection for an Individual Augmentation assignment in northern Iraq for more than nine months. I was station...Expand for more
ed about 60 miles south of Mosul at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Q-West. When I first flew into the base, the C-130 was shot up from ground fire, but fortuantely no one was injured or killed. There, I was the Officer-in-Charge of a facility which installed counter-IED electronic jamming equipment in Army vehicles and was awarded the Bronze Star. I returned home in MD the summer of '08, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and checked into PMA-265, the Acquisition Program Office for the Navy's only tacticaly jet fighter, the F/A-18 Hornet, Super Hornet, and the new Growler. I made my final deployment to the Western Pacific in 2011/2012 with the aircraft squadron VAW-125 out of Norfolk, VA but onboard the west coast aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). In September of 2013, I retired from the Navy after 20 years, 6 months and 28 days of active duty service.
Post-Military Career
My family and I settled down in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia. In February 2014 I started my own Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) performing work on US Navy and government contracts. In the summer of 2014 I earned the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Family
I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my wife, son, two dogs, friends and family.
