James's Story

Life Hello past friends and acquaintances! So much has happened since Kalani. I have thought of you often and those wonderful years I spent in Honolulu from ‘66-‘75. I returned for my first visit in ’97 and was pleased that things, though changed, still seemed familiar. KC drive-in, manapua and cone su-shee were still to be found. I could deal with all the rest! Here is a bit of what I have been up to, I’ll try to make it easy..lol! I attended art school in S.F. before being drafted into the world of music when the Punk thing hit in ‘76. I played in a S.F. band at the time who had a “single” (lol!) and was deep into the culture of the scene. I knew all the N.Y. and L.A. groups that would visit S.F. and play and formed friendships with many of the members- Blondie, the Ramones, Mumps. Television etc… This eventually prompted me to leave S.F. and relocate in N.Y.C. in the Summer of 1977. I eventually led four different bands from ’78-’85. I bartended at CBGB’s for several years to make ends meet and for a while lived in Debby Harry’s old loft on the Bowery. lol! The title of the Chris Columbus film “Almost Famous” best describes my career. I even opened for Duran Duran! I came close to the brass ring many times- but no cigar. As a songwriter and producer I got the opportunity to go to Buenos Aires, Argentina in ‘85 to record an album and eventually form a band. We were a curiousity and soon we were on TV, in magazines, and everyone knew my name. I stayed on surviving a surreal ex-pat rock star life in a country where I barely spoke the language. Two years later, dissullusioned with the music business and missing my native tongue and culture, I went to London...Expand for more
and returned to art and painting, my first love. I regressed to Argentina, this time as an artist, turning my back on the music completely. After several years of reclaiming my muse, I started showing my work settling in my new life as a painter and a more private person. I married my Argentine girlfriend in ’90 and in ’95 we returned the states and S.F.where we bought a Victorian, providentially, right before the dot com boom. By ’99 I was selling well enough in the galleries to feel secure. I also started a business doing painted pet portraits on the side, eventually starting a website to use as my calling card. Look for it.(uniquepetportraits) My first wife and I divorced in ’97 (no kids) and 4 years ago I married Catherine, who is British (now a US citizen too). Catherine heads up a Public Relations firm across the bay in San Francisco. We live in the Berkeley Hills. Several years ago I began trying to write seriously after a lifetime of wanting to. I started off with poetry and simple prose. I then decided to attempt a screenplay, being the hopeless cinefile that I have always been. It got noticed in a competition and that opened up the door. I now screenwrite and paint! We have two dogs, "Otis", a Brussels Griffon and "Oreo", a Chocolate Cocapoo. That's the long, shorthand version of my adult life So... feel free to rattle my cage anytime. I have a great memory! LIZ LOVELL & BILL HILL, please get in touch! All the best! James BTW>>>Sadly, Eric Sekiguchi passed in May '05 in S.F. Sept 06>>> I was just at the Steven B. William's (D.J. KIKI) memorial tribute in Napa. Friends and family said goodbye to his spirit. R.I.P. Old friend! The good die young.
