James's Story

First, a regret. In my senior year in High School, I signed up for a speech class and drama. I had enough credits to only need a couple of required classes along with two ¿work experience¿ classes that could get me out of school at 10:00AM before heading to work. I chose to drop the two electives, drama and speech, in order to do just that. That decision always haunted me, as the seed planted within remained dormant until well into my 40¿s. I am now very involved in local community theatre at Western Nevada College in Carson City, NV, as well as numberous theatre groups in Carson City, Minden-Gardnerville and Lake Tahoe. I've landed several feature roles since 2001 and often wonder what could have been had I not dropped those two classes in my senior year. I am happily married for 23 years now, a second marriage for both of us, with 4 children between us plus a total of six grandchildren...no wait, make that seven grandchildren. Ada and I met in church choir at Bethel Church in San Jose. Our second date was in December of 1984 when we went to the Napa Valley for a little wine tasting. It was at Sattui Winery in St. Helena while sitting out at one of their picnic tables enjoying some food and wine that I realized we would someday be married. I decided not to wait long, and proposed two weeks later. Napa Valley holds a warm place in our hearts and we go back often. I had lived in Napa as a child, attending Lincoln Elementary School in 2nd and 3rd grades, and Dee T. Davis Elementary in 4th grade. I suppose it was at Dee T. Davis where my love for the stage took root. I can't remember my fourth grade teachers name, al...Expand for more
though I do remember our substitute, Mrs Murrey, for some reason. It was in that class, every Friday afternoon, where we were allowed to get up in front of the class and sing, act, or whatever. My friend Jerry (last name?) and I would get up and do a "Joe the Bartender" skit with him playing Joe and me playing Crazy Gugenheim (from the Jackie Gleason Show if anyone's wondering). That had to be where the seed was planted... in those moments of applause as we would take our seat. I can't leave Dee T. Davis without mentioning one classmate. Her face is still ingrained in my mind 45 years later. From her short curly blonde hair to playing the flute in band to even her perfect handwriting...everything about her consumed my young heart. Her name was Christine Beebe. I remember the day I was moving away, gathering my things to go home. Christine was waiting for me, but I had so much stuff to gather up that she left to walk home. I hurried, carrying this mass of books and papers, but could never catch up with her. I so much wanted to tell her good-bye, tell her how I felt, tell her that if there was such thing as a 4th grader being in love, that she would always be a special part of my life. The months that followed were torturous for me. I cried myself to sleep and dreamed of her often. To this day, the pain of that day affects me. Life goes on, however, and as I said I am now enjoying the life of a husband, father and grandfather, as well as occasionally watering that theatre seed. It's been a good life, filled with good friends, and it is for those friends that I post this bio at Classmates. I'd love to hear from you.
