James's Story
Facing economic uncertainty, my parents left Elliot Lake in 1964 when my father found work in Sept Îles, Quebec, leaving me behind to finish grade 13 on my own. After my last exam I left Elliot Lake and made my way to Quebec for the summer of 1965 and then to Toronto where I went through screening and selection to join the air force. in May of that year, receiving my wings in 1967. A lot happened after that, a lifetime happened. My brother and sister and I returned to Elliot Lake in 2010 to see our father’s name added to the Miners’ Memorial. Cancer took him at too young an age, the fate of many of those who went underground in the mines. I remember still my friends from high school days and hope they followed their dreams, too.
