James's Story
1943 - Born: Columbus, Ohio
March 1945 - Moved to Princeton, WV - Where my father was the Virginian Rwy.'s Supt. of the Car Dept.
June 1960 - Moved to Munster, IN (suburban Chicago) -- just one year short of my high school graduation - boy, talk about culture shock!
June 1961 - Graduated Hammond High School, Hammond, IN
1961 - 1963 - Attended Purdue University and Indiana University
1964 - 1969 - Worked: Youngstown Steel, General Refracteries, AT&SF RY.
August 1969 - Moved to Bloomington, IN
1969 - 1975 - Attended Indiana University - BA (History), MA (Folklore) - While a graduate student at the Folklore Institute, I co-founded The Folklore Pre-Print Series and the Folklore Publications Group, which are still in existence today. Also, employeed by IU's Halls of Residence.
1975 - 1977 - Employed CrediThrift of America
1977 - 2000 - Employed Indiana University (mostly in the Treasurer's Area)
1985 - Co-founder / Vice President: Professional Development Group (PDG) - organized conferences / workshops / consulting for the business side of higher education. Sold my interest in PDG back to my partner in 1998.
September 30, 2000 - Retired, Indiana University (Director, Accounts Receivable Management Services, Office of the Treasurer)
October 3, 2000 - April 2015 - Employed Recovery Management Services, Inc. (Vice President)
April30, 2015 -Retired from RMS
PERSONAL:
1963-1964 - Married & Divorced - No children
1973 - Married Linda K. Mullis - one of the best days of my life - During...Expand for more
most of the period between 1973 and 1985, either Linda or I were attending graduate school. Linda graduated with an MLS and a JD and is now retired as Director of the Law Library at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law. She recently published a history of the school.
1995 - Daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth (Katie) born - another of the best days of my life. Katie attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for one year.; then graduated from Indiana University Bloomington's School of Nursing. Katie is now a BSN, RN at Froedtert Clinical Cancer Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
We share our home with two cats . . .
LIFE CHANGING EVENTS:
1960 - Moving from Princeton to Munster
1969 - Returning to college to complete my education
1973 - Marraige to Linda
1995 - Birth of Katie (this was huge)
2000 - "Retiement" from IU
2001 - Craniotomy owing to a fall and subsequent subdural hematoma
2004 - Gastric bypass surgery resulting in the loss of 200 lbs and return to good health
2015 - Spent eleven weeks in the hospital owing to a ruptured colon (diverticulitis) . . . spent the balance of the year recovering my health.
