James's Story
It is nice that Classmates.com provides members an opportunity to list multiple schools when listing our education!
Since my family moved several times when I was a child, I attended seven different schools during my childhood years. The three I attended longest were the last three:
Runyon Elementary School (early part of the 3rd grade to latter part of the 7th grade, 1966 - Feb. 1971),
Phelps Junior & Senior High School (latter part of the 7th grade to early part of the 11th grade, Feb. 1971 - Nov. 1974),
and Jenkins High School (early part of the 11th grade to my graduation from high school, Nov. 1974 - June 1976).
After high school I attended and graduated from the University of Kentucky. My undergraduate degrees were in mining engineering (1982) and civil engineering (1984) and my graduate degree was an MBA (1983). But I took several English courses as electives as an undergraduate and returned to college in 1989-90 to take additional courses in Communications, etc.
Since my childhood, I have loved to read and write, as well as discuss current events, etc. I consider my main career to be as a freelance writer, but I am bivocational, typically working a second job to keep the bills paid.
Though my meager writing efforts earn me few dollars, the writing is blessed immeasurably in other ways. Fortunately, acquiring a lot of money and material wealth is not a high priority for me. I am happy living in a studio efficiency apartment!
Furthermore, I know I could not write anything (or do anything else) without God, so I give God the credit for my immeasurable blessings and any personal success and acknowledge my own numerous limitations.
In my spare time, among other things I enjoy bicycling, taking nature hikes, playing board and card games, attending lectures and seminars, discussing current events with friends, following college basketball as a fan, visiting museums, and traveling when my budget permits.
I am a nondenominational Christian. Before becoming a Christian I was an agnostic for several years, and I respect persons with various religious beliefs.
Incidentally, ...Expand for more
even during my latter elementary school years, high school years, and early college years, when I was basically an agnostic, I prayed regularly and often felt my prayers were answered. However, I knew not whether the answers came from God, my own inner thoughts, ESP from another person, or some intelligent being from another planet communicating with me. As a nondenominational Christian, I feel strongly now that prayer is the greatest power on Earth -- but it is important to test the spirits and make sure one's guidance is coming from the Holy Spirit and not a false teaching.
I remain single. Though I am receptive to the possibility of marriage if I meet the right person in the right way at the right time, I feel it may be God's will for me to remain single my entire life. I am blessed immeasurably to enjoy several friendships and believe it is important not to rush into a romantic relationship too quickly with someone one doesn't know very well.
I am registered as an independent voter. I am usually conservative on fiscal and moral issues while typically being liberal on environmental and social issues. But I enjoy discussing current events with persons who hold a variety of views.
I love to read a wide variety of things.
Music is more of a sideline than a centerpiece for me. But the music I enjoy listening to while washing dishes or doing other things includes some contemporary Christian songs, Christmas carols, a few classic hymns like "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art," and some of the soft rock from the late 1960s and early 1970s like Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
Several unusual events/coincidences and my way of speaking about them led to a series of things that resulted in a few brief psychiatric hospitalizations for me in 1993-1996. But I was blessed immeasurably during that time and am blessed immeasurably now as well.
I do look forward to I hope being able to contact several friends and classmates I haven't been in contact with for some time and making new friends also. In fact I consider everyone a friend!
Enjoy God's blessings, James.
