Mostly I remember changing a lot after my first year, becoming more focused on ideas and issues of the day. ( I spent part of a Summer in Upstate NY working with a civil rights organization in Syracuse, and some voter registration in Mississippi.) ght be right, and that graduate school was necessary. Besides walking on the beach, the occasional love interest, and getting drunk, reading and conversation became more and more important. Grad school happened; first at Harvard than at the Grad Center at Buffalo where I was a Teaching Fellow in the English Department and did an interdisciplinary Ph.D.
