James E.'s Story
Mine is a typical tale, I was born at Ft MacArthur, Ca in an Army Hospital. I like so many others moved every three or four years if not sooner. My Dad enlisted active duty in '47 from the Guard, he grew up in and about Selma, Al and my Mom grew up in Nashaua,NH. I grew up at such resort areas as Camp Polk,La, Camp Rucker,Al, Camp Wolters, Tx, Fort Bragg,NC, Fort Benning,Ga, Nellingen,Stuttgart,FRG, Warner Kasserne,Munich,FRG,Fort Benning,Ga again then back to Wertheim,FRG then Butzbach, and finally back to Hunter AAF in Savannah, Ga. I started out my high school journey in 1966 at Baker High School in Columbus, Ga. After my first six weeks it was off to Germany and Wertheim where we were bused to Wurzburg American High School, hard to adjust coming from a rather large school to a very small one. During the summer of 67 my dad was promoted and we moved to Butzbach where again we were bused to school only this time to Frankfurt American High School, going from a small school back to a large one. In Jun of 68 my dad put in for retirement so he was sent back to Hunter AAF in Savannah, Ga so on the 1st of July 68 we got to fly back to Mcguire AFB in NJ, boy was that alot better than ...Expand for more
taking a boat!!! Oh ya I have crossed the Atlantic three times from New York to Bremerhaven and return!!! My first time in 1961 on the USNS Geiger, returning in May 63 on the USNS William O Darby. In 66 got to go back to Bremerhaven on the USS United States. I spent my Junior year in Savannah, Ga attending HV Jenkins High School, another large school, this was probably my best year in high school, it was like I had lived there all my life, I fit in with everyone. It wouldn't last, during the summer of 69 my parents bought a new still being built house in Irmo, SC so we ended up moving to SC just on the outskirts of Columbia, SC. After my dad retired from the Army in Oct 69, he was hired by Global Associates to fly out at Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. I was graduated in Jun 70 from Irmo High School, Irmo,SC a small school. I really didn't fit in since everyone grew up and knew everyone else since kindergarden. After graduation ended up going out to Kwajalein in Aug 70 and worked out there for Martin-Zachry Construction. I worked on Roi-Namur for about nine months then on to Illiginni. I Left there on an extended leave of absense in Dec 71. Will continue this at a later date....
