James Horn:
CLASS OF 1969
Lancaster High SchoolClass of 1969
Lancaster, NY
James's Story
not a social media aficionado, but now that our class can at least see the bottom of that hill, i'll give it a go...
basics: atheist, pie-in-the-sky socialist, luddite, birder, mediocre pickleballer.
family: four siblings, all smart and kind to others. like Mark Twain's father, it was amazing how much they learned in the intervening years between adolescence and adulthood. no children but a baker's dozen of street urchins indulged as grandkids.
health: discombobulated but still vertical. hair in absentia.
athletes i had the privilege to play with: Gary Loudenslager, Gerry Mikol [in memoriam], Bruce Boundy, Jeff Paolella, John Garland [Johnny - if you could have hit a fastball on the outside corner i might have rated you higher].
education: Noam Chomsky, Richard Dawkins, Barbara Forrest, Chalmers Johnson, Susan Faludi, Charles Darwin, Ursula K. Le Guin, Christopher Hitchens, Naomi Klein, Robert Ingersoll, Susan Jacoby, John Pilger, Ida B. Wells.
marital status: coddled
mea culpas: Ron Karpowicz, you might have made it to salutatorian if i hadn't 'borrowed' your math homework so often. Charlie Hess, when you were harassed by an underclassman i knew [bullied in today's vernacular] i did manage to 'dissuade' him but should have stood by you on your front lawn. and finally, Jim Hanks, a gentle s...Expand for more
oul teased by the crowd [myself included] at the high school bus stop. my apologies, 55 years late.
plaudits: Debbie Flint and Pat Farruggio, for keeping the wayward class of 1969 on 'task' for those many reunions. Steve Houseknecht, for delivering his pledge of allegiance to the UNITED STATES of HAWAII. it was my first glimmer of political consciousness. did expect to see various Houseknecht body parts spread across Mrs.Schlum's homeroom floor courtesy of Principal Oscar the Psychopath. Bobby Myers, who took me under his wing my junior year and continued to push me post high school. Ralph Laraiso, persevered through medical school, only losing half his moustache in the process. Darlene Dorr, gracefully negotiating her way through the minefield laid out for transfer students back in our day.
Lancasterian talent: a shoutout to the the musicians, artists, and thespians. IMO they were the glue that held the school together [though i am glad i never had to listen to another rendition of 'Farmer John' after high school]. in no particular order and with apologies to the many i can't remember: Donny Farmer, Andy Hanzlian, Bridget Allen, Frank Moley, Bonnie Colton, Teddy Chubbuck, Cheryl Feyrer [in memoriam], Mark Henning, Jim Mcintosh, Danny Pilon, Jack Gobetti, Debbie Earsing, Ralph Laraiso.
