James's Story

College I majored in Hibbie, Hammie, and Heiland. Drinking, singing, acting. Tried to emulate the classic English rogue, Tom Jones. Falling in love with love. Driven by lust. Wasted opportunities for a higher education and a degree. But in doing so, I found my soul's calling ... and become an artist ... an actor / director / producer / singer / songwriter. The experience of attending a Quaker Liberal Arts College changed my life. It introduced me to an international community that opened my parochial eyes to a different world than the racist, small minded world of my family and upbringing. My 4 years there redefined who I was. I became political. I found out I identified with liberal Democratic politics more than the rigid, conservative, self serving Republican dogma of Barry Goldwater. I saw students opposing the war in Vietnam. I wondered why? I explored the situation later became an anti-war advocate. I viewed the civil rights movement from a racist's POV and came to the realization that my thinking was wrong. ct for people of color was wrong. I became a human being and supported the civil rights movement and brotherhood between all races. I had my heart broken and my world turned upside down with the death of my girlfriend, Marsha Kyle, in an auto accident that killed 3 other friends. The grief led me to winning a scholarship, from the American Broadcasting Company, to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, in New York City. I dropped out before finishing my degree to attend the Academy. Hugh Heiland was a major influence in my life and responsible for letting me explore theater and ultimately, becoming a professional actor. Jim Haskins was a major supporter of my artistic and musical ambition. I made many life long friends while at Wilmington. John Orentlicher inspired me to learn to play the guitar, which became my constant companion and therapist throught all these years. But most importantly, the cultural diversity, international atmosphere, and artistic freedom I experienced there was the genesis of this man getting in touch with his soul.
