James's Story
After graduation from Pine-Richland High School. I went to college where I studied biology, graduated and taught secondary school in the Centennial School District Warminster, PA for two years. In 1970 I married Gini Tummon and we are still married, which is amazing. In 1971 I decided to go back to school for a Master's degree in biology. About this time I also went to work for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission as a Fisheries Biologist and then Dr. Raney at Cornell University hired me to work for his company Ichthyological Associates. In 1975, I returned to graduate school at Virginia Tech (go Hokies) and earned a PhD in aquatic ecology. Now with no more school options and I actually had to find a job and stay. My first attempt was with NUS corporation in Pittsburgh unfortunately shortly after I began working there Halliburton bought the company and decided to do away with the environmental division. Ultimately I formed my own business Water Science Associates, ...Expand for more
Inc and we did work looking at non-target impacts of pesticides on aquatic ecosystems. Most of this work was done with Agricultural Chemical Companies and the USEPA. This was very enjoyable but required frequent moves around the country to work with different crops. In 1987 an opportunity arose to join the faculty at the University of North Texas (UNT) to continue my aquatic ecology research in an academic setting, and we have been in Denton, Texas ever since. Over the last 20 years, my work at UNT has been centered in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic region of South America, where I have a joint appointment on the graduate faculty at the University of Magallanes in Punta Arenas, Chile. I figure I have another 5 years or so before I retire ... Update: in 2024, I'm still working at the University of North Texas and in Chile. I'd like to catch up with former schoolmates, students, and friends. if anyone is interested in planning a 60th reunion, I am willing to help.
