James's Story
Life
Yes I have pets. Yes I have kids....at least one, anyway. I do have a Goldwing, but I don't wear leathers - too hot. (Besides, on a cruiser that big, you only have worry about being brutally slaughtered by an errant driver, and leathers wouldn't be of much help in that situation).
The journey from Carroll to the present was truly bizarre; some of it painful, some of it pleasant, and some of it in between. All of it has been worthwhile, and I've only those few small regrets that most of us carry, (and some of those I might still be able to rectify). I was fortunate enough to have re-established contact with some close friends through Classmates, and I hope to hear from some more eventually.
I flew tours in the Smoky Moutnains for a while, and then left that job to fly a news chopper in Greenville, SC. This was right after Katrina, and a lot of the footage shown nationally was flown by yours truly. The company then moved me to Atlanta to fly the traffic copter for about a year and a half, and after I had the audacity to ask for a raise after logging close to 2200 hours, they suggested I might look elsewhere. I did.
I'm currently flying an EMS helicopter in the Atlanta area. We're about to field a new helicopter, which is a little more powerful. I consider this to be a major plus, since I won't have to co...Expand for more
nstantly think about fuel, patient weight, and density altitude. We'll be able to fly further and pick up heavier loads. And since our service area also covers the mountains of NE Georgia, and N. Carolina, it'll be nice to have the additional strength. The job itself, like any other, can be rewarding at times. At other times it can be heavily disappointing. Regrettably, there are some patients we just can't save, and the hardest ones to lose are the kids. I'm very much looking forward to the new ship. Unfortunately, it will be equipped with a much more sophisticated avionics package, and my biggest concern is that I won't be able to cope with all of the new bells, lights, whistles, and whiz-bang stuff it will have on it. I'm a creature of habit, and the simpler it is, the better it is. It's like going from the Wright Flyer to the Space Shuttle. Starting the thing is actually harder than flying it. It's not as much fun as acting, but it pays more consistently. (And I still get roles now and then).
I won't bore you to death with all of the steps that happened between then and now, unless you ask, and you really want to know. It was good to see the list of those names that I lost track of, and it was sad to see that some were missing. Hopefully those names not present will join up in the not too distant future.
