James's Story

Coming from a U.S. Marine Corps family I moved around quite a bit. Only grades completed at a single school are 1st, 4th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. Even though I graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1984 having spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force I attended many junior/community colleges because of continued change of stations. Retired from the Air Force in 1993 and moved to my wife's hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts....yeah, "The People's Republic of Taxachusetts." Since retiring I've worked in the access control industry and now in the IT industry as a government contractor for Lockheed-Martin. Been doing part-time retail sales for Ham Radio Outlet in Salem, New Hampshire since 1995. Live only 1.5 miles from the state line. Using the story wizard: I always wanted to be an airline pilot when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were probably right.. I like to go off by myself to the forest or mountains. I also love prospecting in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. My Grandpa Nelson was one of my biggest heros. I don't ever remember seeing him angry. I did get swatted by him a time or two for misbehaving but he was never ever mean. To me Grampa was like Euell Gibbons. Whenever we went hunting or fishing together in the mountains of California there was always a plant or tree from which he would pick something edible and hand it to me. He knew so much about science I guess that's where my love for that field came from. I'm not a math whiz but my love for Geology, Astronomy, Nature in general, Electronics, carpentry I can attribute from him. He's still alive...in me and my youngest son is named after him. Now I have grandchildren of my own and I want to be to them what he was to me. I would like to see Sally McDonough, my 8th grade Geography teacher. As a matter of fact I ran into her last year when I was getting my Toyota Tundra inspected at the local mechanic's. She just happened to be sitting in the wa...Expand for more
iting room next to me and my curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask if she was Sally. She didn't really remember me at first. I told her that I would never forget the 300 times I had to write, "Persistent provocations provoke the patient pedagogue producing particularly painful punishment," for cutting up in class. She asked me if I was angry over that...Heck no! It left a lifetime impression on me though...enough to make my kids know it with parent substituted for pedagogue. Anyway, come to find out Sally knows my sister-in-law....poor her. If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to Embry-Riddle University, then spend the rest on RV'ing, helping deserving students with tuition as well as my own post-graduate tuition. My current age is 54. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be really old. I was so completely correct. Now I'm almost 59. Flashbacks! Wow! What happened to my first crush? She's on Clasmates.com. Hehehe. My best friend would tell you I'm distracted at times., but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as off in Never-Never Land. RIP Bob. I miss those knock-down drag-out political discussions. In the end we agreed to disagree and that always worked out fine. What's the weirdest job I ever had? I used to wash and wax airplanes at an airport. If I had one do-over, I wouldn't have dropped out of high school and I would have gone directly to college after graduation and joined the military then. In 10 years, I hope to be Alive. I'm going to get there by listening to my doctor.. My first job was at the Sheraton Rolling Green Hotel, where I got paid two bucks an hour to so all kinds of general work. What I remember most about it is I painted everything from hallways to swimming pools. One childhood memory I'll never forget is kissing Teri (she belongs to Classmates.com) in the garbage can revetment in Quantico...in the 3rd grade. [Don't worry Teri you needn't feel threatened or anything.] I'm harmless.
