In December,2005 I was 65 and on Medicare. Hurrah! School I worked 5 years at the public library, 3 summers at the public swimming pool and had little time for social events. My favorite teachers were John Blair, Mary Blair and Eldon Long. At the Library, it was my duty to help students find periodicals for term papers and research. A famous cheerleader asked me for a magazine and I said "How about the date?" She thought I wanted to date her and turned purple in the presence of her friends. We were both embarrassed but found the magazine. My favorite non-teachers were Verna Jackson McKenna and Jacinta Alvarez. They were at the library and I learned many things from them. Jacinta was everyone's big sister, especially mine. College I was teaching full time at John Tyler High. Yes, I knew Earl Campbell. His mother is one of my favorite customers. His brother, Tim) is a friend of mine from the Glass Recreation Center which he manages. I went to college at night and summers. It tok me eleven years to get my B.S. in Secondary and Higher Education. It is a broadfield Major with Refrigeration and Air-conditioning and Appliance technology. I graduated from East Texas State University which is now Texas A&M at Commerce, Texas. I finished in 1984. Two years later the state discontinued the program I was teaching and I had to go back to work. Workplace In...Expand for more
the Air Force I took a correspondence course for Refrigeration Specialist. A friend from church owned an Air conditioning and Appliance company. After hours from the base I worked for him for fifty cents an hour to learn the trade. I have been repairing, installing, and teaching Appliances for forty years and I love it. I also repair antique fishing Tackle. I am retired and still work two days a week for a friend in Lindale, Texas. I love to go to school and go several times every year to learn about the new appliances. In 1983 I was listed as one of the most prominent educators of Texas. I hope that meant I helped a few students succeed in life. Military September 1960 I joined the Air Force. In 8 years I was stationed in 5 bases. I went to Technical School for Aircraft control, both manual and computer operated radar. Someone noticed in my records that I had worked at Lon C. Hill (Harlingen Public Library) for 5 years. I was also Base Library Manager at two bases. I also showed all the training films ,drove a truck for the base exchange, cleaned the barber shop and other fun jobs. I was also in Air police duty as a gate guard. It was also noticed that I worked 3 years at Lon C. Hill swimming pool in Harlingen. At one base I was the Seargeant in Charge of Physical fitness testing and their Recreation services Supervisor. At Cape Charles, Virginia A man downtown learned I still had a Water Safety Instructor liscence and The Air Force allowed me to work at night at the base and go downtown to help teach 120 kids how to swim on the beach during the day. I was selected as Airman of the month and nominated as Airman of the Quarter twice. While stationed in Sweetwater, Texas I met my Wife , Priscilla.
