James's Story

From East I went to CU, then Indiana U. My college/grad school years were great--hey, it was the 60s, and I knew just how to remake the world! I studied exotic stuff like Slavic languages and history, and got married. I spent 2 years living in Poland doing research and more years in New York writing it all up. In 1977 I finally got my history PhD, then taught college in New Jersey. I loved teaching but ran afoul of a tenure quota, so I became a college textbook acquisitions editor for DC Heath (Lexington, MA). In '95 moved to near Charlottesville, VA, and built a dream house--which I designed, achieving my high-school goal of doing architecture. Along the way I learned that every problem in life has an answer that's easy, obvious, and wrong. n of freelance editing, editorial consulting, and professional writing. I have a big book (biography) on the way, which'll get done when it gets done. My wife Maria and I have two kids, now in their 20s. Will graduated from UVA and is now a naval officer, training for the nuclear service (aircraft carriers, not subs). Lydia also graduated from UVA and is now in the MD-PhD program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Enjoy: hiking & backpacking, growing things, the C'ville cultural scene, rethinking the foundations of Existence. I haven't been in Denver in years except for business trips, and don't have any family connections there anymore. (I miss the Rockies but now have the Virginia Blue Ridge.) However, it would be cool to reestablish ties with people I knew back in HS and to compare notes about where life has taken us all.
