James's Story
April 10th, 2009
On June 13th 2009, I'll be flying up to Anchorage to drive back with my son to Chicago. He's been in Kodiak for 2 years on a bouy tender as a chef for the Coast Guard and has just been reassigned to Lake Michigan at a station in Michigan City, Indiana.
He will pick me up at the airport in Anchorage and then we are driving 800 miles along the Alaskan Highway to Haines, Alaska. While in Haines we are going to take a 6 hour Salmon fishing charter. We then take a ferry from Haines to Bellingham Washington that is a 3 day + voyage through the inner passages. The trip from Bellingham will take us through Washington, Idaho,Montana, North Dakato, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
I'd say this may be a trip of a lifetime. I'll try to post some photo's
Personal facts:
My wife and I live in the Chicago Illinois area and have been here for more then 30 years. The above photo was taken in our back yard and is of my Wife, our 2 sons and our daughter in law. And yes that's really me in the back.
Our oldest son on the left is a teacher and Graduate of Illinois State University as is his wife, and our son on the right has a marketing degree from the University of Iowa. He did not want to end up behind a desk like his mom and dad so he enlisted in the U.S Coast Guard and is a chef stationed on board a bouy tendor in Kodiak Alaska. We are very proud of our children, and we are going to be Grand Parents for the very 1st time this July or August. We're hoping for a 8/8/08 birth but as long as the baby is health...Expand for more
y is really all that matters.
Shortly after High School I enlisted in the Marine Reserves (can you believe that?) and maintained my residence in OKC and held various low paying jobs.I drove a truck for a couple of years, where I hauled anything from beans to bombs and once or twice I had 40,000 lbs of dynamite behind me.
When I was discharged from the Marine Reserves, I began to move around a bit. I lived near New Orleans where I worked offshore in the Oil Industry. I moved to Wisconsin then to Chicago. Where I met my wife and was married in 1976.
We then moved to Tulsa for a year and a half after which we moved back to the Chicago land area, and we've been here ever since.
We own a nice home in a great suburban community 21 miles west of the downtown Chicago area (known as The Loop).
We live a modest, simple lifestyle that allows me to follow my passion (bass fishing) while my wife teaches Religious Ed at our Church.
Any one that knew me, knew my passion for the outdoors and fishing.
Fishing has allowed me to travel and to fish with the very best BASS Professionals in the world.
I currently hold a seat on the Board of Directors for the Illinois State B.A.S.S. Federation Nation as the Treasurer. Who would of thought?
While I think I've come a long way since 1970, I think my mind is still that of a 17 year old. And I often remind myself of the incredible summer of my Junior/Senior year.
My body on the other hand all too often reminds me that I'm not 17 anymore.
Maybe there will be more to come.
