James's Story

Life I left East Lyme to go into the Army in 1983, and it changed my life completely. I learned more about computers, and worked as an Army Intel Analyst and got to see Europe. My first wife was from Northern Ireland, so I moved there after my European tour was over. My first marriage yielded a wonderful daughter, but the marriage did not last. I then came back to the states and married an old flame, Susan Granata. We now live in Georgia, just outside Atlanta, and have 3 wonderful children, a dog, and 3 cats. (And 5 computers) My children are all Future Computer Goons of America, and can look forward to a prosperous life. I am now working on contract in San Diego, while my family is living in Georgia. I am working as an Information Security Professional, helping deploy a massive data center for a financial company. My daily work focuses on securing the systems and information in the data center. School Hrm... where to start.... I was the shy kid in High School. I was a Photo club geek, Band Jock, and loved science. I still do. Chemistry with Mr. T. Carl Reichardt, I will never forget. Mrs. Morrison, Mr. White, and the darn Doll. Driving Ms. Palmer crazy in Trig/Analyt... that was fun. If only I'd tried to get good grades. You know, hindsight is 20/20... or better. I still love the old Vikings... College Hawthorne College, wow... it was cold, and the dorms were too hot! Steam heat, never stayed the same temp. I still have fond memories of buzzing Pierce Lake, and having one of my fraternity brothers take a picture of it... the irony of it is, I was grounded for 90 days, but the school used the photo the very next year on a recruiting handout! (You can fly like this! only you'll get grounded!) Oh well, I did break the schools rules... so I deserved...Expand for more
it... Anyway, KE was a great Fraternity to pledge, and I'd do it all again... It's sad that the school doesn't exist anymore... I can't even go see it again. *sniff* Workplace I've been working with computers since I left the Military in 1989. I also worked with them heavily while I was in the Military. I have stayed in the computing field, mostly because computers do what you tell them to do. That's their one redeeming feature. I have payed my dues from Help Desk, Training, network design, protocol analysis, security, and many other areas, to end up as a Director of Networks & Security for INFO1. Many courses and certifications later, I really enjoy my job, and wouldn't think of doing anything else. Now I have moved on, working specifically in Information Security, as a Information Security Practitioner . Working with Symantec, I have the opportunity to speak to multiple customers regarding Information Security. While doing this, I also am supportive to the community, volunteering my time at information security conventions, mentoring others who are joining the ranks, and supporting my peers whenever possible. Military The U.S. Army, what can I say. It helped shape me into the man I am today. Duty, Honor, Country... Those three powerful words I still live by today. I spent 4 great years serving our country, as an Intelligence Analyst stationed in Germany. I really enjoyed my time in, and would do it again. I'll never forget the stark beauty of Ft. Hauchuca, the fertile Neckar Vally in Heidelberg Germany, or the trips I took in Germany. Duty wasn't bad, in fact, many of the skills I learned were transferrable to civilian life... I will always be proud of my contribution, however small, to our Nation, and look back on my military years with fondness.
