James's Story

Attending St. Annes for the school year starting September 1956, pressure from my father resulted in my attendence and eventual graduation at Fort Smith Senior High in the school year beginning September 1957. After graduating in ‘60 I played football for the Razorbacks on a full scholarship in 1960 after rejecting the same offer from Notre Dame (Coach Kuharich). That summer I attended the U of A on a National Science Grant, and after returning to Fort Smith upon my father’s death, assumed management of his business at age twenty. Selling the business after five years I attended UofA for a year then transferred to Harvard, graduating in 1969. This was a difficult transition as there were twenty three openings for transfer and eight hundred twenty applicants. Stanford Business School was next with a Masters. Hundreds of companies vie for graduates there and I selected the largest U.S. Industrial real estate developer, Cabot, Cabot and Forbes, Boston, as a vice-president. n Los Angeles, a bank, Japan’s second largest trading company, and its largest real estate firm. During this time I was fortunate to have married Claire Claxton, a registered nurse then in a Masters program in nursing at UCLA, after graduating at Johns Hopkins and UNC. We were married for forty-eight years until she died in 2014 in Austin, TX, where I now reside. Our three sons are happy, well educated, (Emory, Dartmouth, Stanford, UNC Chapel Hill), two are married and thankfully reproducing our line with happy normal bright offspring. One son founded and manages a large hedge fund, another is a master software developer, and the youngest, an officer with Dell. With these gifts from God, Claire and I will live on, as long as God allows us all to walk this earth. My friends from St Boniface and St. Annes are on my mind often and I felt compelled to say hello to all of you. A strange coincidence happened just outside Las Vegas in about 1979. Claire and I and two boys stopped for gas a mile before crossing the Boulder Dam. John Paul Lutz was the owner of the station, and amazingly we recognized each other at once. It must have been twenty years. How well I remember John playing baseball and basketball on the lot across the street from St. Boniface. He visited us later in L.A.
