James's Story
Life
After graduating from University of San Francisco in 1972 with a Bachelors' Degree Majoring in History, entered the United States Army and became an infantry soldier and then Drill Sergeant with the 91st Division in Sausalito California. Married Norma Jean Marlar on June 30, 1973. Completed studies in 1974 leading to a teaching credential through an intern program at San Mateo High School sponsored by USF. In 1974 went to work at Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation producing instruction programs for the US Navy Poseidon and Trident Ballistic Missile Programs.
In 1977 graduated as Distinguished Military Graduate from USF ROTC program and entered the Regular United States Army as a Parachute Infantry Officer with the 509th Airborne Battalion Combat Team in Vicenza Italy. Subsequently became a US Army Ranger and Special Forces Officer. Organized and commanded units of the 25th Infantry Division and 3rd and 5th Special Forces Groups (Airborne) serving in campaigns that include Haiti, Somalia, Morocco, Korea, Africa, Panama, and the Drug Enforcement Agency in the American Southwest. Course at the Defense Foreign Language Institute in Monterey California in 1989. Earned a Masters Degree in Military Art & Science through the Advanced Military Studies Program at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1991. Served four years directing the United States Army Special Operations Command, Battle LAB investigation of the Future of Special Operations. Retired honorably with rank of Lieutenant Colonel from active military service on July 1st 1999.
Began teaching Social Science & English to 7th and 8th Graders at Saint Matthew's Catholic School in San Mateo California in 1999. A Scoutmaster with over 15 years service to the Boy Scouts of America. Have two Eagle Scout sons, Daniel (age 24) and Philip (age 21). Daniel and his wife Julia have blessed us with a beautiful grand daughter, Alexis, born October 14, 2001. Now teaching at Sunnyvale Middle School and have two more grandchildren, Hunter & Joshua. Since 2003 I have played 40-50 baseball games with a great group of Giants travelling to Lodi, Mesa, San Diego, Las Vegas, Tucson, and Stockton for tournaments and every other weekend somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area.
