James's Story
Life
James Reeves is a graphic designer, writer, and educator.
Before receiving degrees in film and graphic design at the University of Michigan, he switched his major no less than six times (including the ever-popular Japanese Literature in Translation) and held 23 part-time jobs (selling oriental rugs, gas station clerk, and, of course, delivering pizzas).
In 2001, James moved to NYC, where he worked as a graphic designer for a few Madison Avenue-type companies before realizing that he did not care if another chocolate bar or cell-phone was ever sold again. At this point, he was ripe for discovering the political and social history of design. None of this was mentioned to him during his schooling, so he enrolled in the Art & Design Education department at...Expand for more
Pratt, where he received his MasterÂs degree in 2004.
Also in 2001, he and Candy Chang founded Red Antenna, a record label and design collective. Launching a traditional record label in the same year that the mp3 achieved popular currency proved to be a challenging (some might say ÂdimÂ) business decision. Nonetheless, several well-received techno & electro records were pressed and even sold to people, and the Red Antenna experiment continues to evolve and produce intriguing music and design.
James currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in design education at Pratt. He also works as a designer for a few socially constructive clients. In his spare time he records music & produces propaganda under the KinoSport moniker. He lives in Brooklyn.
