After I graduated I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force 1971 and somehow managed to stay out of the brig. Though I did nothing of any importance I can say I served my country with pride and dignity when others spit on me and others that bare the uniform and was discharged Honorably. I returned to Columbus not intending to stay but was hired on the Rail Road Conrail as a Gandy Dancer and repaired bridges in Ohio and West Virginia until 1986 when I fell from a scaffold over a contributory to the Ohio River braking my back. Needless to say I could no longer work the steel and the manual labor. So I got over that and took a job driving a semi (tractor trailer) cross the U.S.A. and that was too much fun like a kid with a toy. I then seem to have found a way to get Legionnaires Disease and spent six months in the hospital, Mt Carmel East were my lungs became decimated by this disease. I spent four ...Expand for more
months on a ventilator and I use oxygen still.
All in all I am one of the richest men I know and it has nothing to do with money I'm speaking of the wealth that is far more then material trappings. I think what I'm trying to explain is some know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. I am so grateful for this life that I have the privilege to live and the knowledge that it's not free, their is a price that must be paid just for being alive. There are no rewards for doing the right thing and no compensation for misfortune. What is just is. I think I hear the Buda coming out of me. I will end with a story from a woman who was from Vietnam her name is Mayling " If the monks are right then it is the gift of suffering that brings us closer to god. To teach us to be strong when we are weak, to find courage when we are frightened. To use wisdom in the mist of confusion, and to let go of that which we can no longer hold on to. Lasting victories are never won on any battlefield here or there. Lasting victories are only won in ones own heart.
