James's Story

Life I Graduated I.M. Terrell High in 1969 then went to Tarrant County Jr College for 2 semesters studying Drafting & Design Technology. Joined the Navy under a 4 year Electronics program and, during my physical, had to take a separate color blind test as I couldn't pass the confetti tests. My entrance exam was the second highest ever and I was offered Officers Candidate School (turned it down). I attended Boot Camp in Orlando Florida in 1970 as the RCPO of company 061. My grades in boot camp made me eligible for any rating in the Navy but I had to take another color blind, they wouldn't allow the alternate test and I failed. I was dropped out of electronics (requires normal color vision) and shipped to the San Diego Naval Center to be a Signalman (also requires normal color vision). Even though I was at the top of my class and my instructor vouched for ability to read the color coded flags, they made me drop out of signalman school with 2 days to go. I was assigned to swab decks aboard the USS Schenectady LST 1185 for 4 years. After 7 months in the Navy, I managed to get out with a General Discharge under "Honorable Conditions" and went to Control Data Institute in Dallas and received an Associates equiv in Computer Technology. I moved to Houston and attended TSU between 1973 & 1975 pursuing a degree in Physics. While studying, I worked for Texas Instruments in 1973 in the Autotest Division and after my productivity in one hour was what they expected in one day, I was asked to teach some work simplification classes. TI had a high turnover and in 18mos when I was the senior Technician and was passed over for the supervisor’s job, I left and went to Xerox where I earned the Excellence award. I went to TRW Traffic controls Division in 1975 and installed a Computerized Traffic Control System for the city of Baltimore. I completed the expected 6mos installation in 6 weeks which led to the Parent company, TRW Controls poaching me & offering me a Project man...Expand for more
ager’s job. I joined the Field service division in 1978 and installed a System for the Ontario Hydro Project in Canada. In 1980, TRW sent me to New Zealand on a 1 year contract where I have remained as a self employed Computer consultant every since. I was married in 1983 to A New Zealander (Judith, nee Ellingham), had a daughter (Hannah Lenore) in 1985 and was divorced in 1992. Now in 2004, Hannah is in her second year at Auckland University studying Forensic Science and has had no lower test or exam score than 91 (Proud). I have been living New plymouth, a small town (pop. 50,000) in New Zealand's North Island since 1980 and have made about 19 trips back to the US. I was attracted to the quiet life it had to offer and the low crime statistics. In 1980, there were 6 murders in the whole of New Zealand, twice what it was in 1979. People never locked their doors, left their keys in their cars, Cops didn't carry guns, etc. Being 5 minutes walk from the sea and black sand beaches, a half our drive from a 8,000 foot snow covered mountain, all in all, it appeared to be an ideal place to settle down and raise a family. Some things have changed but its all relative. I played basketball for New Plymouth, squash at the YMCA and joined a boxing club from 1980 until I blew out both my knees in 1996. Now with little exercise I’ve begun to expand around the waist a little (the age doesn't help). Now I'm a work-a-holic and spend most of my spare time reading books (mostly by Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams). I go out to party a bit maybe 4-6 times a year and have made lots of friends here. Except for my knees, I have enjoyed good health over the years. I am happy and take life in stride. To me, everything happens for a reason that may not be evident untill some time in the future so I never cry over spilled milk. I hate no one and don't believe anyone dislikes me. I can't hols a grudge and believe that a person who seeks revenge ultimately suffers.
