James's Story

I'm married with 3 of the greatest children in the world; 2 sons and 1 daughter. My kids are my life and I thank God every day for them. I always tell people that don't have children that you just never know how much you could love something or someone until you have kids. I've been working with the City of North Ridgeville now for over 23 years and the past 17 of those years as the Utilities Director. It's hard to believe but retirement is actually in sight with less than 7 years to go! But who am I kidding? What else am I going to do after I get my 30 years in at 50 years old and have 3 kids in school? Maybe I'll retire from the city and take that job as the Wal-Mart greeter ~ smile. Family and friends are the other things that are important in my life. I still keep in touch with several of my best friends from school and would like to see more of some others. I've also lost a few important people in my life the past few years and their loss has left a deep void in my heart. Randy Comer was one of the very best friends that I had all through my school years and after, and although we didn't see as much of each other as we would have liked in recent years, we did see each other on occasion and it was always just like old times. We could make each other laugh at the drop of a hat. He was the most kind-hearted person that I've ever known and my heart still aches for his family and children. I really miss him. My grandfather passed away in 2006 and he was one of those guys that you just always looked up to from the very first memories of them. y decorated. He always reminded me of John Wayne, another one of my idols, but more than being a war hero, he was just MY hero. He and my grandmother (who passed away in 1992) were always there for our family and were the best grandparents that any kid could ever have. I miss his stories and our talks and his companionship; he was a great guy. The single most devastating loss in my life so far has to be the passing of my Dad in March 2007. The most amazing and wonderful man I've ever known. My parents are both responsible for raising what I would call a wonderful family but my Dad truly made me who I am today. No man ever loved or did more for his family than my Dad. We weren't rich but we weren't poor and had every thing that we needed. We didn't have a big house but we had a home. We weren't just two parents and three kids but we were a family. We all had so much fun together and so much love for each other and now that he's gone, there's so much pain in our hearts. It will always be there and I think about him every day. Anyone that really knew him could tell you just what a great guy he was. He loved sports, especially baseball, which he coached for many years. Diamond #3 at the baseball complex where we all played growing up has been forever named "Sam Whitlock Memorial Field" in his honor. I know he's smiling down from heaven. I miss his smile, his touch, his laugh, his humor, his wisdom, his advice, his stories, his phone calls and all of our times together but most of all, I just miss him. I love you Dad! I'm sure there's been much more going on for the past 25 years but that's all I have for now. To be continued ....
