James's Story

Life Where did the time go - my wife was working in the foreign languare department at college when we met - fell in love - got married. We will celebrate our 40th anniversary in June. We have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. Transferred to West Africa where we spent 3 years. We lived on Ikoyi island, the children went to the international school on Victoria island and I worked on Lagos island. I played with the Navy band for Nigeria's first grand opera, "Opu Jaja". I was given a 1973 All African Games metal for playing in the band. Very nice souvenir. We had a nanny to watch the children, a cook, a day and night watchman, a gardner and a driver for our car. Our children learned to swim in the Ambassador's pool down the street from us. Most of our social life revolved around the embassy crowd. Pan Am really came thru for us on the 4th of July. They flew in American beer and hot dogs. We celebrated at the embassy hut on the bay. Had to take a bannana boat and then trek thru the jungle a bit to get to the hut. Really a very interesting life with many unique experience. Learned to play golf on "browns" since the island was sand. Had to be careful of those little momba snakes that drop out of the palms. Have seen much of the world - been to London and Paris many times, Scotland, Switzerland, Austria, Austrian Alps, Egypt, Holland, etc. While in Egypt we hired a car and driver and went to Alexandria. The pyramids are awesome and the Tut exhibition in the museum was unbelievable! We have traveled on the bullet train between London and Paris three times thru the "chunnel". When our son was in the Navy, we met him in Pearl where they off-loaded their missiles. I sailed back to San Diego with him on the ship. My wife taught school for 23 years. I did some audit work internationally and in the US. Was Manager of Financial Services for the Board for Higher Education of the Lutheran Church-MO Synod, became Manager of Accounting for the Board of Higher...Expand for more
Education, Concordia University System, working with 10 colleges and 2 seminaries. Served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Foundation of Texas. We retired two years ago and moved back to Texas. I play the bagpipes and have traveled all over with the band, including playing at the US Capital, at the Eisenhower Home for the first woman pilot in the war, the real hero who was portrayed in the movie: The Great Escape, Rod Stewart, Former President Bush, Royal Canadian Mounties and Boy Scout Jamboree in Maryland, Marched in the Mardi Gras parades several years, etc. Play only for enjoyment now and for church once in a while. Raised exhibition budgerigars for many years and was treasurer of the national organization for a number of years. Very much into genealogy and family history. Have taken a course in Hebrew, taught myself Greek - don't remember anything now. The last course I took was Hieroglyphics. I have tried to read the Book of the Dead but it is a difficult book to read. Fascinated with Egyptian history. Like to read mystery novels when traveling on consulting work. We have 3 finches and a beautiful long-haired Lhasa. She was a rescued dog we adopted a couple of years ago. I enjoy horseback riding when I get to Arizona, which isn't very often. The last time I was horseback riding I got an armfull of cactus needles when the horse stumbled on the narrow trails in the mountains. Having had a wonderful and varied life, we are now busy in retirement doing what we want. My wife works 12 hours a week at our church daycare center and I do some consulting work for a college in Alabama about once a month. I am Chrm of the Board of Elders and my wife is chairman of the Board of Education at church. I do volunteer bookkeeping for the church. Enjoy sitting on the patio at 6:30 in the morning with a cup of coffee and the dog as we watch the sun rise. We have been richly blessed! Back to London in July '05 and a trip on the Orient Express.
