Jan's Story

Graduated from Loretto in 1953. Left the south to join the Marines and was stationed in Santa Ana, CA; at El Toro Air Base, which is now gone. Got married and lived in IL, and IN for 17 years; divorced and raised my 5 kids in Kansas City, MO where I worked for 27 years. After I retired, I sold my home and bought a 32 ft sailboat and lived aboard her in San Diego, CA. My sister, Kathy, became ill in 2000 and I sold the boat and went back to land living to take care of her before she passed - Lung cancer. I once again bought a boat, a 37 ft. Irwin Center Cockpit in Sea Brook, TX and again am living aboard. I maintain blogs, picture albums and a family website to keep in touch with old and new friends. That should catch you up in case you are interested. Would love to hear from any or all classmates. What is your life up to? Mine is way past wonderful! 2011 - Update: My son, Mike and I (Mike does most of the work) have been refitting the boat and she has become very comfortable and "like home" to me. We hope to be done later this year - and then; open water, here I come. 2012 - Another Update: Time and circumstances have changed a bit and here I am still on the Gulf Coast where I intend to stay. Have bought a slip in a private marina (docominium/yacht club) and the boat is almost through being brought into the 21st century and is very much home. Great friends, great music, wonderful food, super weather, and a love of the water keep me here and happy. Hope everyone is as happy as I. Thanksgiving: Third year in a row, to a favorite bar and grille on the water, for a FREE Thanksgiving dinner. First year there were six of us crazy people. Last year we grew to 10 and this year 14 of us gathered together, declaring it a tradition. All donations and tips are given to charity - this year it was Ronald McDonald House. Proud to share my blessings with such wonderful people and great causes - not to mention the sensational food. 2013 - Am enjoying my new home with a beautiful view - both from the ...Expand for more
boat, the club house and the pool - of the channel from Clear Lake to Galveston Bay. It's hard to beat living on the water. I bought a slip at the Portofino Harbor Yacht Club and Marina; so TX is my home for a long time to come - hopefully. You haven't lived until you spend some time on the water. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, cool breezes, even in the heat of the summer, being rocked to sleep at night by the gentle breeze; hearing the bird calls to each other, listening to the live music coming from the restaurant/bar across the channel from my boat - life is good! 2014 - Here I am updating again. Moved off the boat. At almost 80 years old decided it was a good idea to put my feet on solid ground. Trying out Rosarito Mexico and enjoying it. Will be here for a year and then head back to the States. Not sure where yet - after all, I have 8 months to decide and the US is a pretty big place. Happy Days to all who venture here. Decided it difficult living in a foreign country so am back in the states ready to resume my life in Kansas City, MO. Moving into my new apartment in three days. Decided a 'house' was too labor intensive and am looking forward to this new adventure. I haven't lived in an apartment since I was in the Marine Corps. This will be bit smoother though. After a trip to Clear Lake Shores, TX to sell my boat and to Fairfield, OH to get my 'stuff' from son Doug's home and am cozy in my new apartment. Still fixing it up, but it is coming along nicely. If you are in KC, stop by for a visit? I am cozy in my apartment, with most things in place like I want and have a brand new 'person' in my life - a 7 month old Snowshoe Siamese male kitten, I named Snoopy, who is so much fun. I'm hoping it is still legal to have fun at 81 years old?! The apartment is very comfortable, much more than a 'house' would be - where you have do to all the repair/upkeep/yard, etc. etc. Am also enjoying visiting the local wineries; which I never seemed to take time for when I was working. LIFE IS GOOD!

Sailing the Bay in the Irwin. Mike was at the helm. It was a great day!
Sitting at the courtesy dock at the Shelter Island Yacht Club in Nashville. Strange, the first two marina's where I docked boats were named Shelter Island.
Living in Nashville with my Pearson; but not on the boat.Did some sailing on the Cumberland River
Docked the O'Day, in San Diego Bay on Shelter Island. Sailed the bay and ocean.
Entrance to the Boardwalk, a local attraction next door. Do I always live next to theme parks? Remember Worlds of Fun (two blocks away)?
Settling down on the Third Coast in my newest home.
My little car parked at the marina. We have over 400 boats docked here. Wonderful people living aboard.
My first year in TX it snowed on Christmas Day. What a surprise. This is just outside my boat on the finger dock.
Hurricanes are hard on you when you live on the water. This is the 2008 hurricane Ike. It tore up our marina, but the boats were safe sitting in their slips with floating docks.
Beautiful sunrises and sunsets here
Aidan, the first of the Greats! He is in the second grade now (2010)
Need a dash
And a bunch of other stuff.
You start with a frame
And you end up with a cool, fun ride.
Realized he needed more space, so bought a house and moved on to larger parts
He started with wings. He actually started this project when living in an apartment.
Parts and more parts to build an airplane
And a beautiful canopy - which was sitting in his living room for a while. Keep tuned for more pictures and the finished project.
Sailing friends at one of the pavillions at the marina where we live.
