Jane's Story
Life
I'm currently living in Cambridge, Ontario. We returned from my contract in Nassau, Bahamas at the end of October 2017 and I now have my own tax consulting practice and work from home. It's part of my retirement plan and very much enjoying my independence and building a niche client base with clients both in Canada and The Bahamas.
From 2014 to 2017 I was on a contract with KPMG as Director of Tax Services for The Bahamas. My husband retired when we moved there in October 2014. The Bahamas government introduced a Value Added Tax effective January 1, 2015 and I helped businesses and individuals learn how to comply with tax for the first time ever. I've been a key note speaker at several Bahamian tax events sharing the podium with the Financial Secretary for The Bahamas and had many senior government officials on my speed dial.
I've been married for 47 years and we have 3 grown up sons (David, Andrew & Timothy), two daughters in law and 5 grandchildren (4 girls, 1 boy). My husband (Bill Adams from Moose Jaw) & I were married in August 1979 and we moved to Ontario in 1989. In 1990 I completed my CMA designation and joined KPMG. In 1991 I co-authored a book, the GST Guide for Business and in 1997 co-authored a book on Ontario WSIB.. Before joining the Bahamas practice, I was an Associate Partner with KPMG Waterloo and was responsible for the Southwest Ontario Indirect Tax practice. In 2010 I had the opportunity to share the stage with the Minister of Revenue for Ontario and speak on the HST and at another speaking event, was introduced to the audience by our new Governor General, David Johnston.
My husband & I love to travel and we try to have two trips a year - one to the Caribbean and another somewhere overseas - so far we've visited Sweden, Norway, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Monaco, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Cape Verde, Greece, Italy, The Vatican, China, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Australia and New Zealand. exico, Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Aruba. Our most interesting experiences have been visiting vineyards in France and Italy, renewing our wedding vows for our 30th wedding anniversary in Cana, Israel, attending an audience with the Pope in St. Peter's Square on my 51st birthday, going to a party at a palace in Rome, enjoying a traditional Turkish dinner in Istanbul on my 50th birthday, sailing across the Galilee, riding a camel on the Sahara desert, climbing the Great Wall of China, feeding elephants in Thailand and enjoying a pint at a British Pub in Liverpool that was a favourite of the Beatles. Our travels have also included four river cruises - the Nile, the Yangtze and the Danube/Rhine as well as the Moselle/Rhine with Viking River Cruises. We now have a three-week timeshare in Aruba as we have friends we get together with there each year. We love Canada too much to give up our home but love to get away in the winter.
One of my hobbies is genealogy and I've developed a database of currently 270,000 "kin" - the earliest ancestor is my husband's and dates back to early medieval times and learned he descends from royalty. I've connected with cousins from all parts of the globe and love the history behind the dates and facts gathered along the way. Most of the interesting kin are on my husband's side - some of his cousins (although distant) include Prince Charles and the Royal family, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Madonna, Celine Dion, Ellen de Generes, Pierre Elliott and Justin Trudeau, John Quincy Adams, Vincent Price, John Wayne and Louisa May Alcott. My husband's great grandfathers include William the Conquerer, Charlemagne and various medieval kings.
My oldest son lives nearby in Drayton, Ontario and has worked a variety of jobs over the years. My middle son chose to move back to Regina, Saskatchewan and build his career in sales. He married a Viceroy girl in 2017 and they now have a 8 year old daughter. and 5 year old son. My youngest son is a service manager with Mazda in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and was married in 2009 to a girl he met here in Cambridge but was originally from "the Sault" and they have 3 lovely daughters (ages 12 - 16) to spoil!
