Jane's Story
What a long, strange trip it's been. I went off the Cal Poly, was a mad biologist and a tekkie, then moved to Silicon Valley and became a computer technical writer, a history buff and living historian. Along the way, I garnered honors from the State of California for "service to the People and Parks" (primarily Sutter's Fort), crashed the pretty much all-male Civil War circuit (in 1983), became an expert in period food and cooking, and became a senior technical writer for a bunch of high-tech companies. I've written and published articles on food, collecting, history, fiction, erotica, poetry, and more. I've been a historic figure on PBS specials. Currently, I'm consulting with the Mythbusters TV show.
Along the way, I was married and divorced, no kids, but have a couple of great goddaughters I've been Auntie Jane to, and watched grow up. Taken a lot of teenagers under wing and steered them on a successful life course. I now am honored to count them as part of my unofficial family.
I stand now on the cusp of reinventing myself again, wondering if it's time to reconnect to my roots and my passions, in biology and agriculture and history, and ease my way out of technology. The Great Recession has a lot of us questioning what's ahead, and how our lives will change. How that will manifest, I'm ...Expand for more
not sure. But I've got a great guy supporting me on whatever I want to do, going forward.
The following is my posting from last year, but I'm keeping it around...
Hey, I live for Living History! Why is there no Q&A category for history? Civil War, early California, all that... Artillery, period food, black powder... I'm a leading expert on food in early 19th century California, too. I was 1st Lieut. of a cannon battery at the 145 Anniversary Gettysburg Reenactment. I do consulting on period food and cooking, and have worked with the Dana Adobe in the South County, among other things.
And I'm still a mad botanist (avocational). I just do computer tech writing for a living. I write other stuff, too, mostly nonfiction with historical interest. Mrs King always predicted that no matter what I did, I'd be writing. She was write...um, right! I started writing reports for friends at Cal Poly and parlayed it into a career!
I'm now engaged to a fantastic 24-year-old guy who grew up in the Carmel Valley, which makes me think of Cambria, in many ways.
The photo is VERY recent, though all the perm has now fallen out of my hair, and I'm back to my ponytail. Yes, I am living my years backward like Merlin.
If you thought I was eccentric back at Coast, you should see me now. Life is a fun adventure!
