Jane Hooker's Story
Life
After graduating from University of Michigan in '58 I married Al Brown, a Michigan native and classmate. I taught kindergarten one year while he worked for Bendix in Ann Arbor for several years. We then moved to Baltimore where he worked for Westinghouse. By then we had two daughters, Jennifer now 48 and Lisa now 49. A few years thereafter we moved to Clearwater FL where Al worked for Honeywell continuing his career in aerospace software engineering. I stayed home with the kids until 1975 when Lisa started high school and Jennifer was in middle school. I then did what had been in the back of my head a good part of my life and went to law school at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg to which I commuted daily. After graduating in May '77. I was in private practice for almost three years while I pined for the courtroom. That goal was satisfied when I hired on with the Office of the Public Defender. There I discovered a taste for the demanding competition of trial practice and loved it.
In the meantime the girls completed their educations. They have had successful careers. Jennifer is an occupational therapist and now director of rehab at City of Hope Cancer Center in Los Angeles and Lisa manages software licensing at the University of Rochester. Lisa is the single mom of twin 17 year old boys and a daughter who is 14 going on 19.
Al was eligible for early retirement after 27.5 years at Honeywell and I was vested with the state after only 10 so we retired in '91. Having a dog again and being able to have some privacy was high on our retirement list. We'd vacationed in the mountains of western NC for a number of years and bought property here wh...Expand for more
ere we built our retirement home. We enjoyed the rotation of four seasons after so long in FL. I am so glad that we retired when we did as Al succumbed to lung cancer in '01. He'd had a chance to resume his beloved Midwestern hobby of bird hunting with a good spaniel and many friends from around the country.
I have remained here but in a new house on our property in which I don't have to deal with stairs so I can preserve what's left of my knees for hiking up and down my 50 acres with the surviving Springer spaniel. I have always been a dog lover and the bird dog of Al's dreams is now my loving housemate and frequent boss. She keeps me active which is always a boon to my health and state of mind. She is now failing but still loves to head out the door for a hike and a chase after the tennis ball.
Since living here I've taken a strong interest in the history and culture of southern Appalachia. The area is very rich in wild flower growth and variety as well as an amazingly varied bird population. It is truly a beautiful sight to look out the windows of my modest little home in the woods. I have taken up quilting and much of my social life is with the members of the guild to which I belong. The world's most wonderful neighbors are mine. Western Carolina University is right here with musical and theater performances often free of charge as well as frequent programs about and celebrations of the local culture and history. During the summer there is an outstanding chamber music festival featuring some of the top performers in that field as well as up and coming young artists performing ten programs per season. I have it all here in this little town in the back woods.
